Game 1 — how should the Lakers approach this series? Any injury updates to share?
Lakers at Thunder Playoff Game 1 Game Day 2026-05-05
Lakers Forum » Lakers Game DayI believe that in order for the Lakers to have a chance on winning will all be up to Ayton. If Ayton can stop Chet Holmgren from scoring at will. Also Hayes will have to stand up straight to make himself look taller against the back up center Hartenstein. Ayton done a great job on game six against SunGun holding him to sixteen points. He is the secret for the Lakers winning against OKC. The rest can be handled pretty much by LeBron, Smart and bench players like Vando and LaRavia. Defense, defense will win these games.
Jalen Williams is out which is a big help, but the key is consistent scoring, controlling the pace and the same sort of defense they brought against the Rockets in Game 7... If they do this, they will only lose by 20... :O
The Thunder are the first nearly interchangeable team I have ever seen. They can swap players without losing a beat and I am not referring to bench players subbing starters, I am referring to players shifting positions and assuming the role and responsibilities of that position on both offense and defense, live. You cannot prepare for this and it works against JJs strength which is intellectual strategy. Bahahahahaaaa, the Thunder laugh in JJs general direction.
Take note that this is quite possibly LeBron's final four games of his career. He might make claims about a few more years but he's teasing a catastrophic injury if he keeps pushing and for what? There are virtually no achievable records left for LeBron to achieve. Also, the Lakers need him to retire, and not pull a Kawhi and wait all Summer to make up his mind. He could symbolically play another season in Cleveland but where the rubber hits the road, he needs to pack it in... How are the Lakers gonna pay Reaves if he doesn't?
Remember that the Lakers played OKC twice during the past week of the regular season and got slaughtered, the last game losing both Reaves and Luka to injury. I personally do not think this was coincidence but the intensity required to simply keep up with the youth and athleticism of the Thunder took a toll.
The role Marcus plays will be to temper the defensive responsibility of the front court so LeBron does not lose a leg. Sadly, I would expect more injuries to occur to the Lakers in this series... and I am not being negative! I'm looking at the strain-effort coefficient, yeah I made that up, and something's gotta give... perhaps another hammy. Yikes...
I think JJ's got to give Thiero some run just to take advantage of the super athleticism that he brings where his presence alone will have an impact. LaRavia is a workhorse who is gonna be slam dancing with their bigs in an effort to collect their occasional leavings at best.
What's the key for the Lakers to slow them down? Curb the fast breaks which result from offensive rebounds, so the Lakers must shoot efficiently to minimize OKC offensive rebound opportunities, but they also have to position themselves between OKC and fast break baskets which is likely impossible.
Vando is such a mystery. He's probably the strongest guy on the court and at 6'-10"+, he ought to have presence which is wholly absent in his game, but as well he can play power defense against an opponent's point guard. What do you do with a center who can't score but whose tantalizingly effective defense screams to get more PT?
So youth, JJ, is critical, and that includes Bronny! He can match up athletically with nearly anyone on the Thunder. Coach has to challenge the capable youth to perform next level by giving that last-two-minutes-and-down-one desperation effort while in the game. The Lakers' starters simply cannot sustain that, again, they will injure and exhaust themselves if they try.
I agree that JJ has to give the starters more rest or else they are going to tire out. Give those younger legs on the bench some playing time, not long minutes but give the OKC team a different look. There are a couple on the bench that can score, and there are also a couple that are defensive players. Got to rest LeBron and Reaves more often or else he is just looking for more injuries. I do not think Reaves can guard SGA alone, Reaves would foul out of the game if he tries to guard SGA alone. SGA will throw his body at the defensive player and he always gets that call by the refs. He lives on the free throw line, but by doubling him back and forth, he has to get rid of the ball. I also say give our center Ayton an energy drink, so he can move them feet faster then what he does. LOL! It is going to be tough for our Lakers, but this first game is very critical. OKC might be rusty being off so many days.
If uninjured, Austin would have been an All Star this season.
He can hit the three but it's his drives to the basket, like SGA, which are exceptional.
'Just like SGA', I quote myself, could be a strategy to use against them. Beat them at their own game and keep them on their heals defensively will slow down the offensive juggernaut which is their nightly routine. Emulation neutralizes. would be super interesting to see JJ try something oddball like that. Match up and copy. They might not know how to beat themselves! Trying to counter them simply won't work and the whole world already knows that.
Stated more realistically, the Lakers can match up against this team but they cannot keep up. If JJ balances the Lakers youth with bursts of starter's offense, unpredictably, the Lakers might eek out a win or two against OKC if only by the unpredictable approach.
OKC is so deep...
Second team are some of the best defenders in the NBA...
They have no weaknesses and it's nearly mirrored on their bench!
Hartenstein comes in for Holmgren... and they often play together.
Caruso comes in for Dort...
Wallace comes in for Mitchell...
LeBron is in the playoff zone. No smiles...
Impressive start anyway you measure it. Keep the pace slow to retain starter's energy.
This is what JJ has to monitor like a master this series...
I think I will skip this series dudes. Not really interested in watching the NBA's poster team win in 4-5 games. I'll keep an eye on the box score. On a side note, I flew a Laker legend a few days ago. Was a real honor.
Why does JJ not play Jax and DeAndre at the same time?
Lakers down by eight at the half. Somebody better put a body on Holmgren he has been wide open, and at 7'2" it better be one of the Laker taller defenders.
Lakers need another player that can shoot three point shots. Letting players like Vando, he should know it is going to be a miss. Use somebody from the bench. Timme is a good three point shooter, Bronny, Knecht and Smith. Worth a try because the Lakers have hit very few three point shots. Rui has been missing his attempts, and Kennard has only hit one, but he does not take too many shots. Maybe the second half JJ can think as to who can help hitting threes.
Just not able to hit enough 3's. But let's see if the guys can make a final run here in the last 4 minutes.
Lebron has had a good game though- drills that corner triple, cuts it to 14.
That's all she wrote though as Hartenstein hits another floater. Well the goal is to win one game, so let's see if the guys can bounce back and be sharper from deep in game 2.
There is no way the Lakers can win a game if there are only three players playing offense. LeBron, Reaves and Rui were the only three taking most of the shots in this game. Reaves should have been pulled out of this game, he is still not playing 100%. He must still be hurting because his shooting was simply terrible and JJ kept him in 36"is too long for a person just coming off a serious injury. JJ is simply not a very smart coach, if he sees that his three offensive players are having problems hitting three point shots, WHY not try bringing in some other players off the bench that are young, but who knows, maybe they might surprise him. He does not show any confidence on his players from the bench.
LAKERS LOST BY EIGHTEEN POINTS! I think the players that were in all night just gave up after the end of the third quarter. There was no defense anymore and it seemed like nobody could defend Holmgren.
Even though I did not think OKC had played that good, but it was the Lakers how they played. Our Lakers were just terrible.
