Anthony Davis, Lakers Finalizing Five-year Deal, $190M

Lakers Forum » Lakers News

What a great way to end the offseason. Kudos to the lakers front office esp Rob, the Schroder deal & Trez were part of creating a younger core for AD to stay long term and made Lebron extend for 2 years. We building something there.

Guess this means no Greek Freak

We don't need him. We have his brother!!! Wait....

Yeah, Giannis would've been fantastic, but between only AD and LBJ, theyll take up around 85% (off the top of my head) of our salary cap next season alone. Only way we get Giannis is through trading assets, possibly sign and trade Kuz plus other assets? Kuz's situation is going to get real interesting going forward

Rob up until now has earned our trust though, I'm sure things will work out (with or without a third star) despite me not entirely agreeing on committing that much money to an aging star.

At face value I agree with you not committing money to an aging star. To play devil's advocate though.... We did the same thing with Kobe. Is that why we landed Lebron to begin with? Him seeing our loyalty to star players who bring titles to LA. No lebron means no AD. We're still stuck muddling through **** draft picks and mediocre players.

Look at the Celts. Danny is notorious for cutting ties as soon as he doesn't see the value. I think you're seeing that come around to bite him with kyrie, horford, and now hayward walking without getting anything in return. And you don't see stars wanting to go sign with the Celts out of free agency.

I get the concerns and agree that at some point lebron's production will drop off. I just think long term you'll see us continue to attract top talent and be title contenders. No lebron and LA is not the most desirable place to play in the nba like it is now.

Never doubted it for a sec. Lets get it!!!!!

Never was any doubt!!!

This is actually amazing for us cap wise that he is sign to us for 4 years. His cap hit in year 3 and 4, will actually be good numbers for us. Lets just use 7 million as the increase in salary cap over the next 4 years. Before Covid happened to the league, expected salary cap is for this year was 116mil (7mil increase)

20-21: 109 mil

21-22: 116 mil

22-23: 123 mil

23-24: 130 mil

In 22-23 and 23-24 season AD is a 10 year vet and could of commanded a max deal of 35% of salary cap. Which would be roughly 43 mil in 22-23 and 46.4 mil in 23-24

So if AD took a short 2 year deal so he could resign for the 35% max he would be been making:

22-23: 43 mil

23-24: 46.4 mil

Instead he is locked in for 4 years at the 30% cap hit and each year he gets a 8% raise. So even if the cap explodes in 2 year and jumps like 20 mil like it did in in 2016 season (The reason why Durrant was able to join GSW), AD is still only getting what he signed for today.

So if salary cap increases 7 mil each year over the next 4 years, AD saved the Lakers the following amounts in the last 2 year of his deal.

22-23: 43 mil - 37.9 mil (how much he is actually making) = 5.1 mil (money we are saving with AD doing longer deal)

23-24: 46.4 mil - 40.6 mil (how much he is actually making) = 5.8 mil (money we are saving with AD doing longer deal)

Sounds good. Then why didn't LBJ sign a longer deal? Assuming he's retiring in 3 years? Or goes to vet min?

I’m pretty sure because of the Over 38 rule LeBron can not sign a long term deal that would would till he is 38 or older. So 2 years was the longest he could sign for a deal. I think...

Didn't know there is an over 38 rule. Makes sense then.
