2015-2016 NFL Thread

Lakers Forum » Everything Else

Yesterday, Saturday, July 26th my Steelers opened their training camp because in two weeks they play the Vikings (who also opened their camp) in the Hall of Fame Game. Soon the rest of the teams will join them.

Are you ready for some football? I sure am. Couldn't come soon enough.

Last week the big talk was the NFL QB ratings that were supplied to ESPN by 35 NFL insiders. Insiders meaning people who have various positions in the NFL. Not only did they rank the QB's from the best to the worst, but they further broke down the ratings not just in numeric value, but into tiers. It made for interesting reading and made for some interesting discussion.

For those of you who want to see how the QB's were rated, or perhaps how your own team's QB made out, here is the article and the list:

http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/2015-nfl-qb-tier-rankings/story?id=32652348

I'm sure ready to see If my Cowboys can start where they left off and also curious to see how the running back situation pans out since Jerry elected not to resign DeMarco. So many moves and additions have been made by all teams during the off season so I can say I'm very excited for this upcoming season. Lets go Boys!!!!!

Agree, can't wait for real games to start. Really want to see how defensive line does with new additions.

Pete, Kennon: Dallas is very interesting team this year. They went on the theory that the O line was the real engine that powered that running more than Murray. They may have also had the best off season of any team in the league bringing in Hardy and getting the falling Randy Gregory, who may end up the steal of the draft. Also getting Lael Collins may have been the flat out steal of the year. Still can't believe any team didn't draft that guy in rounds 4 through 7 when he fell because his girl friend was murdered. The police said he wasn't a suspect. I mean take him, if he's charged, then cut him. What's the loss of a later pick? Anyway, no GM was smart enough to draft him so a guy who is a top ten pick talent ends up the best o line in football with the Boys. Man, those are some really good additions for that team on offense and defense. The opener is staring us in the face this Thursday with my Steelers traveling to NE. What about my Steelers after winning the AFC North last year at 11-5? Well, there is good news and bad news. The good news is, when the squad is all together, we probably have more offensive weapons, more long and quick strike ability than any team in football. Big Ben, a true franchise QB is now surrounded with a surfeit of amazing skill players: the best wr in the league, Antonio Brown, probably the best all around running back in the league, Leveon Bell, second year physical monster, Randy Moss clone Martavis Bryant at the other wr spot who just destroyed in camp and pre season games. Slot receiver Markus Wheaton, veteran tight end Heath Miller. With these guys in....

The first weeks games are in the books. While we know fortunes will rise and fall and the opening games are not the end all be all of team's fates, lets take a look at some of the more interesting action. My Steelers lost up in New England, no surprise there. They actually could have pulled it out, but two missed field goals and an easy blown touchdown catch by Heyward Bey sealed their fate. You gotta make those plays, especially in New England or you are dead meat. It is no coincidence that the teams who make the least mistakes usually win games. As for my bet, it converted by slimest of margins, half a point. For those who bet the Patriots, if you laid the 6.5 you cashed in, if you gave 7 like some books gave, it was a push and no money changed hands. Dallas got a gift from Eli Manning in the form of several brain malfunctions that prevented the Giants from a probable win. Dallas really needs to send him a thank you card. Dallas showed a shell of the potent running game without Murray. Is this a sign of things to come? The even bigger worry is Dez Bryant will be out for several weeks from injury. Expect for the gift win, things could not start out worse for the Boys. Seattle lost on the road to the rapidly improving Rams. Another game where Wilson simply could not give them enough to win, which goes back to an interesting conundrum. Wilson is a good QB. But he's not a great one. He has not shown an ability to carry this team on his shoulders like a true franchise. Seattle is fortunate to have him, given franchise QBs are almost impossible to find, but they are unfortunate that....

SPQR, Have to agree with you about Dallas. They got really lucky, but it also says something about them overcoming those gift turnovers. They looked sloppy last year against 49ers in the 1st game, and things turned out alright. Over all I saw a lot of sloppy football this 1st week, think it has to do with teams keeping their starters on sidelines during pre-season. But agree Dez is a big loss. But think we'll get running game together. Murray didn't look so great without that Dallas offensive line.

Hey Kkennon, nice to see you back here.

A win is a win and at the end of four quarters Dallas was ahead. That's what counts, right?

The Murray offensive line question is kind of like the chicken or the egg thing. One game certainly won't give us any answers. But we should know more as time goes on.

Out of your triumvirate of great offensive players from last year you are currently reduced to o only Romo now. That's a tough break. I always hate to see really great players like Bryant get long term injuries.

I hope you guys can hold the ship together till he returns. On the other hand if you win in Philly without Dez that would really Bode well for the season. It will be interesting to see how Dallas approaches their offensive philosophy while Bryant is missing.

Wow, Cowboys lose Romo and still pull it out!!! This is definitely not the same old Cowboys. Defense 3rd in NFL after 2 weeks, without Gregory, Hardy or R. McLain. If Weedon can manage the game, expect them to win fare share of games, while Romo,Dez out. Go Cowboys!!!!

Kkennon, I just heard Dallas traded for Matt Cassell. If Weeden is still as bad as when I saw him with Cleveland, it will turn out to be a smart move since you will need him soon. Week two has brought up some interesting story lines. How about this: Baltimore, Seattle, Philly and the Colts are 0-8. What odds could you have gotten to bet that? Enough to retire on. This week is essential to all these teams, since coming back from 0-3 to make the playoffs is a tough road. Which of these teams have the best chance to make it? I would say the Colts because they are in a horrific division and Seattle because they still have that very talented defense. Another problem for Seattle looms. Both super bowl years they relied on home field to give them a huge boost. The last time they went on the road in the playoffs in the Wilson years, they lost at Atlanta. Without home field, their chances to get the big show really drops because they just don’t have a very potent offense. My Steelers showed how powerful their offense can be by racking up 43 points on Frisco. And this without monster running back Bell and monster receiver Bryant. Bell will return this week and Bryant in two more weeks. I go back to the 70s and I honestly feel this Steelers offense, when the full compliment is back, is the most talented I have ever seen. And that takes into account Marino’s Dolphins, Montana’s Forty Niners, Kelly’s Bills, Fout’s Chargers and Warner’s Rams. Yes, that is a bold claim, but when I look at the talent and depth, Bell, Brown, Bryant, Miller, Williams, Bey and Wheaton, I just don’t see any team that ever had that kind of firepower. It’s all up....

Well Cowboys played great 1st half, than just ran out of bodies. Thought Weedon played ok, did what they asked him too. But really saw how much they miss Romo and Dez. Also to many defensive players out. Got to give it up to Falcons, came out in 2nd half and put on a show.

Hopefully my boys will get better against New Orleans next week.

Sitting there watching the 2nd half, I just couldn't believe we couldn't stop the bleeding somehow. Hopefully we can take care of business against the Saints and then get ready for Hardy and McClain to come with reinforcements on the defensive side. Smh at both Claiborne and Carr....smh.

Kkennon,

One has to give the Boy's credit for putting up a great fight being so devastatingly short handed. The problem is the longer the backup quarterbsck plays the more the flaws become apparent and the opposing defenses zero in on them. All four back up quarterbacks who played this week lost. New Orleans is certainly a team you would like to go against if you're playing back ups.

Sadly my steelers will now be in the same situation with the long term injury to Big Ben. Now it will go from having one of the best offenses in the game to trying to stay afloat for a, playoff spot with the aged, always erratic, turn over machine Vick.

It sucks. A promising season can end just like that. Ask Dallas and Pittsburgh.

Totally agree SPQR, and even though I'm a Cowboys fan and basically hate the steelers. Lol!!! I was really sorry to hear about Big Ben. NFL is a lot better league when all of its star QB's are playing. As for the Boy's, I'm hoping that they can hang on in weak NFC east division, till rest of team gets healthy.

KKennon,

I really admire the way the Cowboys have hung in there against all odds, not just with the two wins, but also giving an Atlanta team that has a very potent offense all they could handle this week. Nobody can fault the Cowboys for lack of effort.

We both are staring at a hard, dark road. Romo and Bryant will be out a long time. Ben will be out shorter, but even with the prognosis of 4 to 6 weeks, it is brutal because our schedule is the toughest in the league and is just m*rd*r. If Vick doesn't come up with some really good games, and in my view, that is asking a lot of him, I can see the Steelers easily losing every one of those games Ben is out.

I am afraid, because of our injury situations both of our teams will be losing many precious games where every win is at a premium and every loss telling. I am not sure how we can hang on-its going to really hard to- but I know I will be rooting for my team and yours to somehow get through the crisis stage with enough wins until our stars return to still have a fighting chance to make the playoffs.

It's really tough to wait all year for the NFL season, with high hopes for your team, only to see such an impact caused by injuries to seminal players. All we can do is hope that somehow we get enough done not to be knocked out before we are both healthy again.

Hard to believe the NFL season is three weeks in already. Does any sports season go faster? Seems like it comes and goes with the blink of an eye. Although it is still fairly early, a few teams seem to be standing head and shoulders above the rest right now. New England, Green Bay and Arizona. With Denver a bit behind. My Steelers had a horrific week. Yes they won on the road, which is always good, but what a cost. Big Ben down for four to six weeks with MCL sprain and bone bruise. It really is the worst thing that could have happened. Now we must rely on turnover machine Mike Vick, whose game I didn't like back in his prime. If he doesn't step up big, the Steelers could well lose every game Ben is out. That is how hard our schedule is over the next six weeks. Some interesting results from last week: The Giants finally didn't give a game away and beat Washington. If they can limit their mistakes, this team may well start to make a good run for the playoffs. The Bengals came from behind in Baltimore to go the 3-0 and relegate the Ravens to 0-3. These were the kind of road division games Cincinnati always used to lose. Are they finally for real? Is Dalton? And how about those Raiders? Going to 2-1 with the always difficult flying to the east coast win, this time over the Browns. Carr and rookie receiver Cooper continue to shine. As does running back Murray. Philly finally won their first game handing the Jets their first loss all in one game. Atlanta goes to 3-0 under new head coach and former Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, who is the early front runner for coach of the year. So far looks the Falcons made....

Big game for my Boys, a game they should win. But with all the injuries, not going to be easy. Let's go Cowboys!!!!

SPOR, thought steelers let one get away. Kicker really blew it! I was disappointed in their run defense. But think Vick didn't do a bad job.

Well, more injuries. Another lose, stick a fork in them, they're done. Think I'll start pulling for a high draft pick. lol lucky the rest of NFC east sucks too!! Come on Cowboys.

kkennon1 wrote:

Yep the injury bug sucks.....Somehow I think we can pull off a win against the Patriots since Hardy, McClain and maybe Gregory are coming back. Call me crazy but it's just a feeling I have. Hate losing Dunbar. That being said, let's go Cowboys!!!!!!

Hopefully they can do it, it would be a big boost. Although Gregory is doubtful. We'll see, Let's go Cowboys! !!!!!

Kkennon,

Yes the steelers blew that ravens game. It really hurt them because it was the easiest game without Ben we will have for the next month.

The kicker did blow it, we cut him, LOL, but coach Tomlin was just as culpable. Twice in OT we had fourth and one and what do we do? One play we run Vick left, the second time we have him throw a timing slant pass! WTF?

If we had converted either of them, we win. Pete Carroll got ripped for that infamous call in the super bowl, yet here is Tomlin with a back like Bell, and he makes the same mistake Caroll made, twice! Talk about stupid. Bell is one of the best backs in the game.

I don't blame you if the Boy's keep losing to start rooting for losses. If a season is going nowhere then a high draft pick is the one good place to go. But because of the records in your division I don't think it's over for you yet.

Pete, I admire your enthusiasm coming into the new England game. But since you did say call you crazy for feeling you will win, I'll call you crazy LOL. I will say this, if the boys win it will be the biggest upset in the nfl for the entire season, for obvious reasons.

I'll also say good luck this week. I can't see how Dallas will pull it off but I'll be hoping they will.

Week four is in the books. As I was discussing with Kkennon, my Steelers lost a heartbreaker, a game they should have won if it weren't for any of one of four things: Two blown field goals and two blown calls by Haley and Tomlin. Tough loss to take since it could have been a win without Ben, it would have kept us close to Cincinnati and would have stuck a dagger in the Raven. Arizona fell from the undefeated list, losing to the Rams. The singe biggest event of the week was a blown call in the Seattle-Lions game. Calvin Johnson fumbled into the Seattle end zone, Seattle players subsequently batted the ball out of bounds. It should have been Lions ball at the Seattle one with a minute to go. Instead the officials gave the ball to Seattle. This play has serious ramifications. First, it dropped the Lions to 0-4, a hole the can't climb out of, but of more importance, it rose Seattle's record to 2-2 with the win. It keeps them right behind Arizona and prevented them from falling to a dangerous 1-3. When the officials of a league don't know the rules, that league has a problem. Big games this week: Seattle at the undefeated Bengals at the top of the list. Denver at Oakland in a big division battle. My top ten this week as a couple new, undefeated entrants. New England. 3-0. They take pity on some team by having a bye. Will they take pity on injury ravaged Dallas this week? Doubtful. Green Bay. 4-0. Pedestrian win over Frisco. The Rams are next. Cincinnati. 4-0. The most talented team in the AFC on both sides of the ball keeps on winning by smashing KC. Denver. 4-0. Survives a rough, tough defensive struggle with Vikings at home. Arizona. 3-1. Road loss to division rival Rams. Seattle.....

Another loss, oh well. Have to say G. Hardy look great. But the more I watch Cowboys, the more I think it's Dez effecting team more than anyone else. Dez drew double coverage, making it easy for other receivers. Now defenses don't fear Cowboys passing game. So they're loading the box to stop the run. Either way, at least this show J. Jones that come draft, they need another #1 receiver, and RB, also need to start looking for QB of the future.

Kkennon,

Bryant not only opens up your passing game but the whole offense.

But the real fulcrum is Rome. Great wide receivers come and go but top quarterbacks are what ultimately give a team that big edge. Romo was putting up huge numbers and winning games long before Bryant arrived.

When you lose Romo and we lose Ben all hope will be lost no matter how good our receivers or defense, or the whole team is. I remember those great, great steelers teams before Ben, that couldn't get over the hump for lack of a great signal caller, including the one that lost to Dallas. If we had Aikman and you had O'donnell we would have won that championship.

Once we lose Ben and Romo all that will be left is that long, endless search for the next great quarterback. And that search can last decades. I know, I lived through one between Bradshaw and Ben.

I hear you, I felt the same way after Staubach. Had to wait for Aikman. But the reason I said Dez was, in that game against Philly, Romo passes mostly went to TE and RB's. Receivers still weren't getting open.

Dam I was wrong....lol. Oh well, I guess when you keep telling yourself something over and over again, you believe it....lol. Well I will say that Greg Hardy is something and Jerry should go ahead and sign him to an extension. 6 straight 3 and out's....smh.

Pete,

Hardy certainly was a beast.

Kkennon, Pete:

See Dallas is going with Cassell next week?As I said, anyone who had the misfortune of seeing Weedon attempt, and I stress, the word attempt, to play quarter back in Cleveland, as I got to because he was in the steelers division, knew this move was inevitable.

I hope Cassell can give you guys a bit more stability and production there. He can't be any worse than Weedon. It had to be done.

Yeah I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping Cassell can get our passing game going. I too saw Weeden in CLE and I'm still not sure why we ever signed him. I'd rather go with the 3rd stream backup out of Boise St. than Weeden or Michael Vick. Anyway, water under the bridge now. It can't get any worse....lol. I HOPE.

Pete, I agree. When Dallas signed Weedon i thought WTF? The fact he is still drawing a nice salary and can't play a lick shows just how few quarterbacks there are in the league. Guy should have been out of the NFL years ago. Well my Steelers pulled out a great road win and overcame an atrocious performance by another lousy back up quarterback, Mike Vick to do it and win on the road against the Chargers. For three and half quarters Vick looked some fan who put on a uniform and got to play. The win was enable by a very strong defensive performance and the super human abilities of running back Leveon Bell. Bell has been called by many NFL gurus the best back in the league and anyone watching him in this game would be hard pressed to deny it. Seeing him make full speed, stop on a dime cuts to gain over 100 yards against a stacked box was watching an athletic marvel. When Tomlin decided to go for the win on the last play instead of the tie with a field goal, it was Bell who got the carry and Bell who just refused to be put down short of the goal line, as he should have been. Just a tour de force performance by a very, very special player. Vick was horrific for every second the game till mid way though the fourth quarter when suddenly he came alive with a long TD bomb to Wheaton. Later he made a crucial third down scramble for a first down to keep the game winning drive alive then hit Heath Miller at the one to set up Bell's final heroics. I loved Tomlin's decision to go for the win. I don't think Vick would have out dueled Rivers in overtime.....

SPQR,

I would say Mike Vick pulled a "Tim Tebow"....LOL!!!! Well the Tebow that played in Denver. The Atlanta Falcons are like my Cowboys, all hype and nothing to show for it (PLAYOFFS!!!! in Jim Mora Sr. voice). I wasn't surprised the Saints beat ATL, well actually I picked them to win. It really shows that no matter what your record is, you still have to strap up and play the game.

SPQR, loved that steelers win. Now some of these Cardinals fans will shut the hell up!!! L. Jones looked pretty damn good.

Happy Cowboy's fan, living in Phoenix. Lol

Pete,

I see there is no love lost with you and Atlanta, LOL. That was a crashing loss to the saint's. Nice pick there by the way.

As for Vick, thank you, thank you, thank you knee injury! Thank you!

Kkennon, Pete:

Such a huge win for us without Ben. Funny thing is Jones was so bad in camp and preseason the last three years since we drafted him, Jones had become a running joke with the fans and media here.

He was so bad the steelers signed Vick just so Jones would never get on a football field. Go figure, right.

I started calling for Jones last week when it became apparent Vick can do absolutely nothing. I mean nothing can be worse than Vick. I'd even take Weedon over him.

The steelers have so much offensive talent, more than any team in the league with Bryant back, all we needed with Ben gone was a, half decent guy who can complete some passes and get the ball to the play makers a bit and we would put up some points. Vick was not even that and at least yesterday Jones was.

When Ben comes back, this offense will be unstoppable and the league will see a new superstar born in Bryant. This guy is Randy Moss all over again. And yes, I saw Moss play and I'm not kidding.

Somebody very special is happening here and I really am excited about the possibilities.

Also see Dez Bryant is scheduled to start practicing. That's great news. I know it's been tough for you guys but maybe not too late yet.

With regards to Vick, I saw the play he was injured on and for the life of me I don't understand why this guy just won't SLIDE!!!!!!. He brings that on himself. As for my Cowboys, I don't want Dez to rush back to try and save a season. To me it's not worth it. He's the future of the franchise so he needs to proceed with caution. But then again, knowing him he won't.

Yeah I'm with you Pete, really hope Dez takes his time coming back, this division is still winnable. Will be rooting hard for Philly tonight, Wow can't believe I just said that!!! Go Philly. Lol

Kkennon,

Looks like you got your wish. Philly is hammering the giants in the third. Dallas still has hope.

By the way, are we the only three football fans on this whole site?

I believe we are the only 3 football fans on the site. It's hard to multi-task....LOL!!!!!

Haaaa, right you are Pete! Right you are! Week six is in the books. Man is this flying. Way too fast. Some interesting results this week and I think we are starting to get a preliminary outlines on who the better teams are. My Steelers had a great game against Arizona. It was a bad game until into the third quarter Mick Vick got injured with the Steelers behind and grand total of six passing yards with the most talented offense in football around him. Once very mediocre Landry Jones came, surprise, surprise, our playmakers started getting the ball and we scored 20 straight points to win the game against one of the NFC’s best teams. Even more encouraging was holding the highest scoring offense in the league to thirteen points. The Steelers are rising with a bullet with Ben just a week or two away. The only concern is the offensive line which lost its second starter for the season in this game. One more injury there and we have a major problem. How will Jones do this week in KC? Could have another nice game, but his history dictates more likely that he will throw four picks instead. The other game that really, really caught my attention was the Panthers winning in Seattle. For the second week in a row and the third time this year, Seattle gave up a sizable lead to lose a game, this time at home. During their super bowl run years, this would never happen. And with the defense folding up, the offense and Wilson have shown no ability to put up big numbers to offset the defensive problems. What has happened to Seattle’s defense? They really haven’t lost many players. They are still young. Perhaps it is complacency. Mabye the loss of defensive coordinator Quinn. Or....

SPQR,

IMO Seattle is still reeling from the Super Bowl and not giving Beast Mode the ball. Those guys were looking at each other confused on D but then again they were laughing it up with players on the other team after the game was over. There's an elephant in the room with this team regarding the Super Bowl and Pete Carroll is the only one that can fix it.

As for my Cowboys, I've read that the Cowboys have been working with Nike and they have come up with a special cleat to protect Dez's foot. One of the cleats will be larger than the other with all types of protection and inserts. With all that being said, I still say no Dez. You are the FUTURE!!!!

Your Steelers will be okay. As Keyshawn Johnson would say, just give Le'veon Bell the dam ball!!!!!...lol.

I really hope the Patriots and Jets game live up to the hype or should I say Brady vs Revis Island.

Pete,

I think your right. There was an interesting article I read in sports illustrated about the impact of that loss. There were lots of recriminations and animosity in the team over that loss. So much so that Wilson took the team on a summer vacation trip so they could hash out the bad feelings they had to each other and put it behind them. That trip may not have worked from what I've seen so far.

I'm hoping Bell gets the ball a lot because Jones really is capable of horrific play. If he passes I hope it's to six foot four Bryant, LOL.

Sucks the patriots jets game is on at one, the same as the steelers. I really wanted to catch that one. You know, the two jet games and the game in Denver are the only ones I can see new England possibly losing. If they can get through them I think we are looking at an undefeated season for them.

Hey Baptist! Nice to see you here.

Nor is it NFL Topbuzz. But the Lakers will suck so bad this year people may eventually wish it was.

We play your Raiders this year, November 16th I believe. I'm looking forward to that one.

I read your posts all the time.... As soon as u put the Raiders in your top 10, they havent won.. Thx... Lol... Realistically they should be sitting atop their division with a 4-1 record, but leave it to Oakland to find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory... I surmise next season will be when they return to the playoffs, but who knows... Shoot me a text when u have a chance

My Cowboys suck!!!!!!.....LOL!!!!......Time to prepare for next season. This season is a wrap Jerry!!!!!!!

Hey Baptist,

It's nice to know I have one reader here, and of course being the eminent and legendary John the Baptist, that means more than a million regular readers!

You told me to get your raiders in the playoffs hence they made my top ten, lol. Sorry about the Jinx there kid.

With Payton Manning obviously winding down rapidly someone has to take Denver's spot atop the West soon, no? In fact I'd make a pretty good guess this is potato heads last year. So why not next year for you guys?

Pete,

Just too tough to over come the loss of Romo for that long. Backup quarterbacks are a sure fire death knell for a team, as the steelers found out again today.

Really hated Tomlins decision not to start Ben. He was cleared to play and said he was ready. If that had been Brady I damn well know Billechick would have played him.

With our tough schedule we couldn't afford to lose that game against a weak team and fall three games behind the bengals.

Another consideration is Ben is notoriously bad in games back from injury, 1-6. Against the bad Chiefs we may still have won with a sluggish Ben, but if he plays bad next week against Cincinnati, forget it.

Tomlin said right after the game Ben will start next week. Funny the recuperative powers a loss has bestowed. That brilliant decision came one week too late there.

Now unless the bengals sustain a really bad injury the steelers are relegated to wild card status. With potential trips to Denver, Cincinnati and New England populating that road a trip to the super bowl looks very slim.

SPQR,

I was shocked that the Steelers lost to the Chiefs. Didn't see that one coming but I guess that's why you have to play the game.

As for my Cowboys, the return kick for a TD by an ex Cowboy is enough said............

Yeah, that return really hurt, Cowboys dominate in every way, except for the most important. TURN OVERS!!!

Starting to believe there might be something to what Stephen A. keeps saying " they're a train wreck waiting to happen, whatever can go wrong, will go wrong ". Lol

Yeah Stephen A. Smith appears to be a prophet....lol!!!

Pete,

It didn't shock me. One thing the nfl shows us, if you are starting a mediocre quarter back, or a back up, you can lose to any team in any game. That Is why those so few top signal callers are just such a very precious commodity. And why you and I will be crying very bitter tears when Ben and Romo are gone for good.
