Jason Collins, 1st Active Male Player to Announce He's Gay

Lakers Forum » NBA News and Rumors and Basketball Talk

Quote:
This story appears in the May 6, 2013, issue of Sports Illustrated.

I'm a 34-year-old NBA center. I'm black. And I'm gay.

I didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn't the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, "I'm different." If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I'm raising my hand.

My journey of self-discovery and self-acknowledgement began in my hometown of Los Angeles and has taken me through two state high school championships, the NCAA Final Four and the Elite Eight, and nine playoffs in 12 NBA seasons.

I've played for six pro teams and have appeared in two NBA Finals. Ever heard of a parlor game called Three Degrees of Jason Collins? If you're in the league, and I haven't been your teammate, I surely have been one of your teammates' teammates. Or one of your teammates' teammates' teammates.

Now I'm a free agent, literally and figuratively. I've reached that enviable state in life in which I can do pretty much what I want. And what I want is to continue to play basketball. I still love the game, and I still have something to offer. My coaches and teammates recognize that. At the same time, I want to be genuine and authentic and truthful.

Why am I coming out now? Well, I started thinking about this in 2011 during the NBA player lockout. I'm a creature of routine. When the regular season ends I immediately dedicate myself to getting game ready for the opener of the next campaign in the fall. But the lockout wreaked havoc on my habits and forced me to confront who I really am and what I really want. With the season delayed, I trained and worked out. But I lacked the distraction that basketball had always provided.

The first relative I came out to was my aunt Teri, a superior court judge in San Francisco. Her reaction surprised me. "I've known you were gay for years," she said. From that moment on I was comfortable in my own skin. In her presence I ignored my censor button for the first time. She gave me support. The relief I felt was a sweet release. Imagine you're in the oven, baking. Some of us know and accept our sexuality right away and some need more time to cook. I should know -- I baked for 33 years.

When I was younger I dated women. I even got engaged. I thought I had to live a certain way. I thought I needed to marry a woman and raise kids with her. I kept telling myself the sky was red, but I always knew it was blue.

I realized I needed to go public when Joe Kennedy, my old roommate at Stanford and now a Massachusetts congressman, told me he had just marched in Boston's 2012 Gay Pride Parade. I'm seldom jealous of others, but hearing what Joe had done filled me with envy. I was proud of him for participating but angry that as a closeted gay man I couldn't even cheer my straight friend on as a spectator. If I'd been questioned, I would have concocted half truths. What a shame to have to lie at a celebration of pride. I want to do the right thing and not hide anymore. I want to march for tolerance, acceptance and understanding. I want to take a stand and say, "Me, too."

Imagine you're in the oven, baking. Some of us know and accept our sexuality right away and some need more time to cook. I should know - I baked for 33 years.

The recent Boston Marathon bombing reinforced the notion that I shouldn't wait for the circumstances of my coming out to be perfect. Things can change in an instant, so why not live truthfully? When I told Joe a few weeks ago that I was gay, he was grateful that I trusted him. He asked me to join him in 2013. We'll be marching on June 8.

No one wants to live in fear. I've always been scared of saying the wrong thing. I don't sleep well. I never have. But each time I tell another person, I feel stronger and sleep a little more soundly. It takes an enormous amount of energy to guard such a big secret. I've endured years of misery and gone to enormous lengths to live a lie. I was certain that my world would fall apart if anyone knew. And yet when I acknowledged my sexuality I felt whole for the first time. I still had the same sense of humor, I still had the same mannerisms and my friends still had my back.

Believe it or not, my family has had bigger shocks. Strange as it seems today, my parents expected only one child in 1978. Me. When I came out (for the first time) the doctors congratulated my mother on her healthy, seven-pound, one-ounce baby boy. "Wait!" said a nurse. "Here comes another one!" The other one, who arrived eight minutes later and three ounces heavier, was Jarron. He's followed me ever since, to Stanford and to the NBA, and as the ever-so-slightly older brother I've looked out for him.

I had a happy childhood in the suburbs of L.A. My parents instilled in us an appreciation of history, art and, most important, Motown. Jarron and I weren't allowed to listen to rap until we were 12. After our birthday I dashed to Target and bought DJ Quik's album Quik Is the Name. I memorized every line. It was around this time that I began noticing subtle differences between Jarron and me. Our twinness was no longer synchronized. I couldn't identify with his attraction to girls.

I feel blessed that I recognized my own attractions. Though I resisted my impulses through high school, I knew that when I was ready I had someone to turn to: my uncle Mark in New York. I knew we could talk without judgment, and we did last summer. Uncle Mark is gay. He and his partner have been in a stable relationship forever. For a confused young boy, I can think of no better role model of love and compassion.

I didn't come out to my brother until last summer. His reaction to my breakfast revelation was radically different from Aunt Teri's. He was downright astounded. He never suspected. So much for twin telepathy. But by dinner that night, he was full of brotherly love. For the first time in our lives, he wanted to step in and protect me.

David Stern issues statement supported Jason Collins coming out as gay

Kurt Helin Apr 29, 2013, 12:01 PM EDT

Jason Collins is the first active NBA player, the first active American major team sport athlete, to come out as gay. He did so Monday in what will be viewed as a watershed moment.

Collins also will not be the last to come out. David Stern knows that and struck the right tone in issuing a statement in support of Collins.

“As Adam Silver and I said to Jason, we have known the Collins family since Jason and Jarron joined the NBA in 2001 and they have been exemplary members of the NBA family,” Stern said. “Jason has been a widely respected player and teammate throughout his career and we are proud he has assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue.”

One of the first current or former players to comment was Baron Davis, who has worked this postseason as an analyst on NBA TV these playoffs. He went to twitter.

I'm proud of Collins. IMO he made the right decision of coming out, someone had to come out eventually. Don't be surprised if numerous other players across major sports start openly coming out and saying that they are gay.

Wow! Out of nowhere! Good for him!

Even Bill Clinton getting involved:

Quote:
I have known Jason Collins since he was Chelsea's classmate and friend at Stanford. Jason's announcement today is an important moment for professional sports and in the history of the LGBT community. It is also the straightforward statement of a good man who wants no more than what so many of us seek: to be able to be who we are; to do our work; to build families and to contribute to our communities. For so many members of the LGBT community, these simple goals remain elusive. I hope that everyone, particularly Jason's colleagues in the NBA, the media and his many fans extend to him their support and the respect he has earned.

Good stuff.

I dont care who sleeps with whom. next.

^Heck, I wouldnt mind having him backup D12 if he resigns -- his big body always gives other bigs fits!!!

What an inspiration to gays and bisexuals everywhere! As a bisexual male myself, I am proud of Jason Collins for going public with this! I am not really the type to showcase my bisexuality, but if I am asked about it of course I will say who and what I am with pride: Hi, I am Glen, and I am bisexual!

Repped (+1)

@MySportsLegion: #Warriors coach Mark Jackson on Jason Collins coming out and saying he's gay: "I'm praying for Jason and his family."

He's gay... He's still a man and it's still his life. He has that choice to live however he chooses. Who gives a damn who doesn't like it.

Awesome.

There is nothing greater, in my book, than the open celebration of Reality!!!

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

Good on him, I'm glad he's come out. It's better to live your life as who you are rather than conceal it. That said, it in no way affects his basketball abilities and I hope people don't look or treat him differently because of his sexual orientation, however naive that notion may be.

Good on you Jason Collins, you took the first step and I hope others follow your lead and not hide in fear.

Mark Jackson is a Minister, by Trade. That's how they talk. Not a big deal, IMO, and I wouldn't read too much into it.

There is going to be another athlete that comes out and this one is rumored to be in the NFL.

Actually Brown is a Clown, Mark said that because he wants Jason to reconsider his lifestyle.

Mamba1024, you're not the only bisexual male here. Proud of Jason for coming out, just get those stats up! Kidding.

Its funny because most people probably didn't know who he was.

This man has a lot of support but it is not like a Kobe or Lebron coming out of the closet. He is currently an unemployed NBA player that as yet has not been picked up by another team and if this does not happen he becomes a free agent. Not a major story to me.

Well, if he did, in fact, say exactly that -- very inappropriate.

But where might that quote be? Was it part of a tweet, or an interview? Was it a soundbite of a larger quote?

Because I can't find anything, yet. Not anything that directly & explicitly states that he wants Jason to "Reconsider his lifestyle", at least.

Time for Chris Bosh to come out now !!

Ok so since people are supposedly born gay (which I don't think is true), why is it that he and his twin aren't both gay... They share everything, but that. interesting... LOL

Pretty sure he is wishing him and his family well wishes in the future. However there is a little stir going around but with Chris "clueless" Broussard. He was on one of the shows on espn basically trying to say that Collins has SINNED. Heard he is getting crucified which he should be. Hate the dude.

Expect Westbro Baptist Church to picket where ever Collins lands next year.

Because identical twins aren't always the same in sexual orientation nor do fraternal twins have the same sexual orientation.

My point exactly... They rarely are... You're stating exactly what my point was... Until we find the gay gene (which wont happen, because its psychological), I'll just keep thinking that this is a result of their environment. Jason Collins had a girlfriend/fiancee for 8 years. Sounds like he's confused to me... Anyways, I'm out (no homo)... LOL

Lol. I was basically just agreeing with you.

I agree that this really isn't a major story and the media is really trying to make this a bigger deal than it should be. IMO it's nothing groundbreaking, it was going to happen eventually. Matter fact it was way overdue.

Double Post - Weird

Personally, I could care less about where jason sticks his pee pee, or ANY ONE ELSE for that matter. However, there are a couple of things that disturb me greatly, so maybe one of my fellow lgbt ltbrs can explain it to me.

As long as I've been alive, I have NEVER had a conversation, nor do I know anyone who has sat around having a conversation about who will be the first gay player to come out. I say that to say this.... nobody cares. Why do gay and lesbian people think that other people care about their PERSONAL lives? I'm not trying to be harsh, I'm just saying that nobody cares about your sexual preference.

And secondly, we on this forum disagree about EVERYTHING from kobes shot selection to artests thought process. But never in our disagreement do we even think that someone is hateful, or needs to be dismissed because their view or opinion differs from ours. so it perturbs me that every time a gay person of prominence decides to come out, straight people or christians are made to feel as if they are hateful or intolerant because they object to the gay lifestyle. Why is that?? Why must chris broussard retract his OPINION about homosexuality when collins chose to get on tv and profess that he is attracted to men? What jason collins chooses to do in his spare time is his business. It does NOT warrant a sit down interview, a cover on sports illustrated or a call from the president when there was a young lady strung along for eight years, put in harms way because she wasnt aware that her fiance was having sex with men and then jilted at the alter. It makes it seem as if the only thing of importance is the coming out of the first gay athlete. And IF thats the only thing of importance in america I'm here to tell you we are in trouble.

This is quite possibly one of the most asinine and ignorant posts I've seen on this site, and that's saying something. People are born gay, it's not a psychological thing. Why would someone choose to face the persecution of ignorant people on a daily basis? Why would they choose to have less rights than straight people have? That's not psychological or a lifestyle choice, it's a part of a person's identity, something they're born with. Close-minded people such as yourself are the reason that there's still such animosity and hatred directed towards the LGBT community.

He was engaged because he was obviously confused or afraid of his true identity and was probably trying to fit in with the rest of his community.

On an unrelated note, I happened to catch what Chris Broussard said and I think there's a lot of Christians who would beg to differ with his interpretation of Christianity. He seems like he'd fit in perfectly with the Westboro Baptist Church and the lunatics that join it. I've never liked him, he's a terrible journalist and this incident has just made me like him even less.

There are over 1500 species of animal that some part of their population exhibit homosexual tendencies. The greater majority appear to be found in birds, sea mammals and primates. Science has no explanation as to why this occurs. If you believe in evolution this makes sense if not please ignore my comments.

I agree that it shouldn't matter but so many people aren't there yet that others have to state it for them to get there or their children to ignore their parent's philosophies until they become such a small minority it won't matter who holds hands while crossing the street.

That's why it's important now and specifically for sports. It's been happening across America in many different dimensions, but in sports where the world has treated it with much more machismo than it necessarily is there needs to be that acknowledgement there are more than just straight cis people in sports.

  1. Being sexually attracted to the same sex is not a life style. It's how we are born.

  2. Why is coming out a big deal for GLBT peoplel? It is the constant condemnation, the judging, the harassing the GLBT get from close minded straight and religious people that make coming out a big deal. You say people don't care about my personal life? Actually they do care about it, very much so. Enough to vote against me being able to get married in the state of California. Sad to say not everyone is as open minded as you are.

  3. Chris Broussard certainly is entitled to his opinions and has the right to say it. But why does he and so many others have an opinion on something that has completely nothing to with them and feel like he has the need to talk about it on National TV? I mean wasn't Chris Broussard taught "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all?"

I didn't know that they found the gay chromosome/gene. Science figured out what makes a boy a boy and a girl a girl in the mothers womb. Its called the X and Y chromosome. Somewhere along the line they forgot to find out what makes that person try to change from what they were born as... Sounds psychological doesn't it... Sorry, but there are no facts that support your claim. Not even remotely...

I'm sorry guys, but as much as NBATruthwriter is being homophobic and is obviously not saying things the right way, he actually has a point in something: it has yet to be proven that being gay is completely genetic and it's something you're born with. There have been evidences of genes that influence your homossexuality and some studies have shown that PART of being homossexual is genetic. But even the researchers don't deny that being gay isn't all genetic. For those who don't know, Dean Hamer is the main researcher of the gay gene. Here's a quote from an article:

""Gay gene" researcher Dean Hamer was asked by Scientific American if homosexuality was rooted solely in biology. He replied:

"Absolutely not. From twin studies, we already know that half or more of the variability in sexual orientation is not inherited. Our studies try to pinpoint the genetic factors...not negate the psychosocial factors." "

So as you see, the main researcher himself has said that being gay isn't totally genetic. If you think you are in position to argument with this guy, think again, lol. Basically the main researchers of the relations between biology and homossexuality defend that being gay is influenced by all sorts of things, from genetics to environmental factors, to social factors and experiences, traumas, etc...

Another thing, related to Collins and many others. Look, if he was totally gay, from a genetic standpoint, there's no way he would've been able to be married to a woman for almost a decade and have had sex with women for so long. For those straight, imagine you had to have sex regularly with men for a decade. My god could you have lived like that?? Just to think about it, s me. As I'm sure, even thinking about having sex with a woman for a geneticly gay men would him too.

But why does he and so many others have an opinion on something that has completely nothing to with them and feel like he has the need to talk about it on National TV? I mean wasn't Chris Broussard taught "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all?"

hey oclakerfan,

i appreciate your dialouge, and i want u to know that anything i say is not meant to be hurtful or disrepectful to you or any gays...i just like dialouging with people on different issues Smile

your first point. until the doctors locate the gay gene, i think you will have a hard time convincing people that you are born gay. the fact that jason is a twin, they share the same genetics and dna and his brother is STRAIGHT......

to your second point, as a christian i try to walk in love and treat all people with compassion, respect and value. but as a christian, i also have to let you know that if i had to vote for/against gay marriage...1000 times out of a 1000 i would vote against it. it has NOTHING to with you, but rather what i believe in and will stand up for. i believe that "marriage" is a sanctified union, ordained my God between a man and a woman. not a man and 15 women, or a woman and woman or man and man. voting against gay marriage is not because i care about what you're doing in your home. its because i dont want my children growing up thinking that marriage is whatever one DECIDES it should be. or that the expectations and standards of Godly life are to pushed to the side and minimized.

i don't think there is a straight person who doesn't want to see ALL of our brothers and sisters afforded the same rights and privileges that come with a marriage. if president obama were to draft a bill that says civil unions carry the same protections, provisions and rights as marriage and send it for vote it would be passed YESTERDAY. however, when i ask my gay friends if they would vote for it the answer is always an emphatic "NO!" "its not marriage!" they say. that's what i say too, "its not marriage!" just because i sit in my garage until 8 the next morning doesn't make me a car. and just because two men decide they want to spend the rest of their lives together doesn't make it a marriage. it "appears" as if the gay community is not willing to stop or compromise until EVERYTHING in our society is transformed into their vision or until EVERYBODY is beaten into submission. the same way stephen a. smith can get on tv and rip dantoni a new one and nobody blinks, chris broussard should be able to get on tv and express his "opinion" without the rest of the country lableing him hateful or homophobic. i'm sure you didnt say to stephen a. "if you don't have anything good to say about dantoni, don't say it at all." we were ALL cheering him on.

jason collins should be commended because he is living what he believes is HIS best life. all of us should be living in freedom and peace of mind. however, all of this applause and adulation is not warranted. he has an ex fiance that will be living in fear for her life for the next ten years because he was clearly having sex with other men while engaged to her...he is no hero. a man is supposed to protect his woman, not put her in harms way.

tim tebow has be ridiculed, cursed, dismissed and everything else because he gets on tv and professes his love for Christ. and lets not talk about ray lewis...the country was about to riot because a man dared to profess his faith in Christ. however, a basketball player professes that hes a liar, a cheater, and loves other men and the WHOLE country is throwing a parade. and its a valid point is because christians are mocked, ridiculed and embarrassed on tv EVERY day...nobody cares, its just par for the couse. but if a christian dares to express himself on certain topics they're all of a sudden hateful, and narrow minded. somehow, i think there's enough inequality going around.

Repped (+1)

All good stuff, here.

'Cept I take issue with the "Ordained by God" part. If that was truly the case, Marriage would have been happening since the Dawn of man, and would be virtually identical, in terms of dynamic, cross-culturally.

And if anyone here were to delve in-depth to all the Global, Cross-Cultural Research on the subject at-hand, specifically Human Sexuality, most opinions on this board, on all sides, would be thrown into a meatgrinder.

Thanks my friend, and you may not be a christian but we have the same blood in our veins, purple n gold baby. That makes you my brother for life Smile

Oh and by the way, the gay gene that is being researched and studied is only for MEN. It doesn't explain homossexuality in women. In fact, that same gene makes women more fertil, and "more straight". So, at least for women, you HAVE to admit it is not genetic and not something you're born with.

It just bothers me when people say you choose to be gay... To me it's like who cares if you choose to be gay. I don't think one decides to b gay because they want to, they're gay because of attraction they just have, its natural for me.. If its how you're raised then lets so be it. Just because you may not be born gay does not make it wrong in anyway. Life is about happiness and whatever you "chose" to do then who cares. I'm sick of people caring about people's lifestyles and how they live. The only wrong doing in life are people who bully and talk down to one to make them feel unwanted and scared, people who steal from others, rapist, pedophiles, and people who hurt or kill people... Gays, Jews, blacks, Asians, whatever should not be discriminated and judged.. If you're Christian cool live by the bible but to me "god" loves you no matter what as long as you're a good person and treat others like the way you want to be treated and that is with respect.

Ps why in the world would someone want to be gay after all the bashing and the remarks they see and hear growing up.. It's all natural. Everyone is beautiful in different ways. Love is love and everyone deserves it.. Hate and violence will always be there but people need to let people live there lives and just allow them to pursuit happiness. Isn't that what you want ?
