I totally believe that the lakers are going to pull through this series. Yea one game we got blown out.....So what get up and go fight. Thunder shot 73%. That is a big shocker. They normally average 43%!!! And to all you haters who say kobe was locked down....you were not watching the same game as me. Kobe handled business. Unfortunately Kobe can't win a game by himself. I need for my other laker teamates to step up tonight. Steve Blake...what is wrong with you make a freaking shot and be the backup point guard we need you to be. To my little man ramon sessions you keep doing your thing I see you!! All I know is that Kobe will hit two free throws with 18.3 seconds to win the game. Unlike the so called "MVP". Kobe has good talent around him. But back to the MJ thing MJ made his team better by being so valuable when he was in. Just like Shaq. Shaq doesent need to get assists to be able to get his team to be better. 1 Shaq and MJ are both good teamates Kobe is not. 2 Shaq and MJ both shoot a higher percentage then Kobe. 3 Shaq and MJ are so hard to guard that it opens everything else up for everyone else and MJ got other people involved without having to get the assist. 4 MJ and Shaq got more rebounds. 5 MJ and Shaq play more as a team then 1 on 1 like Kobe. Kobe does not make his team any better plus Kobe had great talent around him he had Shaq but he dident get along with Shaq so now Shaq is gone. That never happened with MJ.

Ok, excluding Kobe's rookie year, even though he usually did not play PG, he has led the Lakers in assists every year. In the years he had Shaq and a better team, he won championships. In the years when the team was weaker, he didn't win a championship. But the assists have been consistant year in and year out. Also, when you constantly draw the double (sometimes triple team) that leaves others open. Helping your team mates to have wide open shots normally would make them better. Unfortunately, when Kobe sends it to them, they put up bricks. Not Kobe's fault.

LK, with your posts I don't like to quibble, because I usually agree entirely with you. But, this once let me quibble: two words, "King James".

For years, the debate has been about Kobe making his teamates better. Personally I'm totally against that entire phrase. I believe that either your on a good team or your not. Throughout the history of basketball, barring injury, the best team ALWAYS wins the title.

I think there has only been 2 or 3 players in history that actually elevate the level of their team. Magic Johnson being one of them. But with that being said, if you put Magic on the Charlotte bobcats, his assists will be cut in half...why is that?? Did he all of a sudden forget how to make his teamates better!!?? No! It's because the level of talent isn't there!! Personally I get tired of hearing that Jordan won because he learned to make his teamates better. That's complete bull!! If you follow his stats year for year, his assists actually dropped every year he played. The difference is that the level of talent increased around him. For example, Jordan won the mvp in his final championship run averaging 28pts and 3 assists...I REPEAT 3 ASSISTS. Now you tell me who's he's making better with 3 ASSISTS. Now if Kobe would have averaged 3 assists, the media would've kill him. Now 2 years before the bulls won their first title MJ averaged 32pts..8 assists...8 rebounds! And your telling me he didn't know how to include his teamates til 2 years later! And for some reason they only won 47 games...now why is that??? (THE LEVEL OF TALENT WASN'T THERE!!)

That's true Lakers#1. You know I've been thinking about that, and what I came with is just like John Salley said...People hate Kobe because he challenges Jordan's greatness. Kinda like Barry Bonds to Babe Ruth. In any other era, Kobe would be recognized as the greatest athlete playing the game, but because of jordan, he's going to be constantly knocked for it. Now, when Jordan averaged 37pts and won 47 games, he came 2nd in mvp voting. The year after he averaged 35 and won 50 games, he was the mvp. Now, maybe 50 wins is the bar for mvp, but the fact that Kobe didn't come in the top 4 or 5 for the voters is absolutely RIDICULOUS!!!
I'm still pissed about that. If Nash can win an mvp for what he did, then John Stockton (who wasn't even in the running) and Jason Kidd deserve a couple for what they did throughout their career.

Excellent Job you will also get no debate from me. If Kobe had the developed skill around him he could average 10 assists per game. He can only do so much before the players around him have to step up their skill level and allow him to receive assists or any other stat for that matter.

And, I don't think anyone is saying that you can measure the worth of a player by his assists or any other single stat (and probably by any combination of stats).

What the argument is about, is the hypocrisy of the press. They state thus and so about Kobe, and then twists the stats anyway they want to make Kobe a bad "team" player.

The fact that Kobe has been on a team that couldn't be made good by Runtboy (Nash) is the point of this argument. You have to have teammates that complement each other, is what this argument is about.

People talk about Nash and give him all kind of credit. Well, you sub Marion, Barbosa and Diaw out with Smush, Walton and Odom and see how close to some kind of MVP Nash gets. Your right momo, but didn't want to curse on the blog. It just eats at me the way they trash Kobe for doing the same things they say made Jordan great. I think Kobe is the greatest player of this era personally and that's not just being a laker fan saying that. 35pt average hasn't been seen since 87 and they just brushed it aside like it didn't happen. They even sweep the 81pts under the rug saying "well, if you take enough shots, you'll score alot of points" AAAAAAAAHHHH!!! They drive me crazy. I have a feeling that Kobe's career wont be recognized until he retires.....that hurts :(

I think there has only been 2 or 3 players in history that actually elevate the level of their team. Magic Johnson being one of them. But with that being said, if you put Magic on the Charlotte bobcats, his assists will be cut in half...why is that?? Did he all of a sudden forget how to make his teamates better!!?? No! It's because the level of talent isn't there!! Personally I get tired of hearing that Jordan won because he learned to make his teamates better. That's complete bull!! If you follow his stats year for year, his assists actually dropped every year he played. The difference is that the level of talent increased around him. For example, Jordan won the mvp in his final championship run averaging 28pts and 3 assists...I REPEAT 3 ASSISTS. Now you tell me who's he's making better with 3 ASSISTS. Now if Kobe would have averaged 3 assists, the media would've kill him. Now 2 years before the bulls won their first title MJ averaged 32pts..8 assists...8 rebounds! And your telling me he didn't know how to include his teamates til 2 years later! And for some reason they only won 47 games...now why is that??? (THE LEVEL OF TALENT WASN'T THERE!!)

i have every confidence that kobe could play in either PG or SF. thats just the kinda player he is. i think he will shine no matter where he is played.

however, i agree with the fact that we dont have enough depth in SG and that kobe playing at SF would create a problem in giving more time to less skilled players like smush or vujacic (not wishing to say they are crap or anything but...) and less time to good players like RAD and Odom. so kobe at SF is out in my opinion.

also, if kobe played PG it would allow more of our good players to be on the court at once, (kobe, odom, RAD, kwame, mihm) but the SG position is traditionally played by smaller (not as small as PG's but still...) who are more moblie and quicker. again, nothing against odom but i just dont see him as a agile player who, at 6 10, can take it around the likes of LBJ etc. the only up side to odom at SG is that he may have a height advantage over a lot of the the other SG's in the league but this is incidental in my point of view.

i agree with charge, we dont want to burn kobe out. but that doesnt mean he cant run the point or play sf for a few minutes here and there. i believe with rad playing the 3 and odom being able to play the 3 as well, we should require kobe to play the 3 for more than a few minutes a game. if we do trrade for al harry, which is still a slight possibility, we shouldnt require kobe to play the 3 at all.

Kobe playing the SF position in the triangle means he will be posting up more than usual. If that happens, they will need someone to stay on the wing and hit outside jumpers and/or penetrate. Though kobe will still be the primary SG, tex indicated he will get spots at SF. Maybe that can place Radman at the wing playing the guard spot on the offense. (maybe thats the logic behind the signing or vlad) having a SF/PF for defense but can be the SG on the offense. Kobe can then post-up on offense and still guard the perimiter on D

I agree, Kobe at PG and Odom SG wont work.
But I have a question, in the triangle, does it really matter what position you have by title? For example if it's better scoring opportunities for Kobe at the SF, why (in the triangle) can't he just be placed in that position on offense? Why does the lineup have to change? I mean, it can be Kobe and a bunch of centers and he should still be able to be in whatever position he wants to be in as long as the triangle is in use. Could be wrong.... but I though thats what the triangle was for, which is why there is no traditional pointguard. Like I said, I might be wrong, but I was sure that the triangle allowed anyone on the floor to be anywhere according to the defense. So if Kobe wanted to post up...he could...or if he wanted to be on the wing...he could, just as long as they were running the offense.

true, which is why I don't see kobe at SF too much. Honestly, with the current roster I don't see Kobe playing too much PG either. I can see kobe for 40 minutes just at SG. Moving Kobe to SF just means Rad or Odom sits with one of our guards coming in. I'm not sure if this thread grew from the Rush to Lakers thread, but I still prefer Odom/Rad over Rush or Peterson.

According to tex winter, he would like for kobe to play more of the 3 (SF) next season for him to have more scoring opportunities. That would mean a gap at the SG position for about 20-25 mins/game. What's your take on this? and who would you think can fill that slot? Sasha? Shammond? Evans? Smush? Rush? What about a trade for Morris Peterson?

p.s. in this picture Jordan does score the basket, but it's because Kobe swats the ball so hard and so straight down that it makes it through the rim. Jordan gets the point but he doesn't know who helped him slam it home.

Jordan should be remembered for his greatness. He may be the best of all time. Hopefully Kobe beats him at that game too.

If you look at my picture on the right it gets the imagination thinking.

Personally, I like to think of games to 11, no win by two, but best of 5 series.

Jordan takes number one because he sets the tone better than anybody

Kobe takes number two because he's gotta rebound from a personal attack, The series just got personal when Pippen gave him the middle finger between round one and two.

Kobe also takes number 3 just the way Reggie Miller hit that deep fading 3 on Jordan back in the day. This round is a gimme because Kobe's 3's are going down.

Jordan, on the brink of elimination pulls the crossover on Kobe just like he did on Byron Russell and the Jazz and sinks the game winner.

Game five, tied 2 a piece (respect for both sides given) Jordan manhandle's Kobe for the stretch but doesn't contain the conditioning that Kobe does and wears thin at the end. Kobe makes one foul to hard and Jordan is a little screwed up. Kobe hits 2 threes and windmills the tying basket. 10-10 Jordan tries his infamous buzzer beater like in the gatorade commercial but it rims out. Kobe rebounds it dribbles back and pulls a bank fade shot over the shorter Jordan.

Kobe 5-4. 3 reasons. Kobe picks the battles he can win and does. Jordan's game is not as good as Kobe's (arguable). Jordan never knew when to quit. He pushed himself beyond his abilities and sometimes lost.

great point. Jordan favored, Kobe booed. Also if there are two's for deep shots Kobe has a huge advantage. He carries every attack that Jordan did but also has range. Respectfully, Jordan had a way more accurate mid range fade away, and more creativity attacking the rim. But nobody adjusts in the air from contact like Kobe, and shoots the lights out like Kobe.

This matchup would be an all out war till the end. The type where the ref blows a whistle because he can't keep up with the two.

Personaly i say kobe. Why u say? Well first off kobe is hated and he knows the odds are against him so that would motivate him more to beat Jordan, Kobes' hit some of the most difficult shots ive ever seen, not that J hasnt. And 2nd Kobe loves to be the underdog and at the end he proves them wrong. In a 1 on 1 game i give it to kobe 7-11, and plus defense wins games, and thats a fact.

I forgot to say that Garnett needs to get smart and notice that he is never going to win a championship in Minnesota. Mvp status every year individual Stats will over the top, but in that market you are only going to get one star and he is it. Kevin don't be Karl Malone, Charles Barkely, Patrick Ewing ,or even Gary Payton. The lakers are an athletic and young enough team to win in the near future. Garnett and Kobe Sounds more promising than Wade and Shaq.

Kobe needs a sharp shooter, some who he can depend on atleast 50% of the time to knock down shots. Right now there is no one on the lakers who is that consistant. Lamar Odom is one of the best players in the nba, everyone knows this, but comparing him to Scottie Pippin is not fair to Lamar, Scottie was a leader and more important on the teams he played on than he got credit for. Scottie took alot of pressure off Micheal Jordan. Kobe has never had a player with that type of star consistency thats including Shaq. Think about Shaq and his 4th quarters ,the hack a shack is in effect in the close one. If Michael was in trouble dish the ball to Kerr, Pippen, or Harper. I think if Lebron or Garnett pair with Kobe that is an easy 3 to 5 rings. I prefer Garnett I think he would fit in without getting rid of or changing Odoms role, as a matter of fact he would make it easier on Odom and Bryant who do you double teams.

According to my knowledge KG is not happy with his current team, I think there is some hope to bring him to L.A next year, but the bigest target for the Lakers is Lebron James. That's a dirrect order from Dr.Jerry Buss. He want's the kid in L.A with kobe bryant. I think that'll be the best move for Lakers. He's young He's great player and he can grow old in this city,he can be the next Magic Johnson,Kobe Bryant, or any other Laker legend.
Put him in the team with Kobe and watch how the team will win Championships. Kobe will be more free and his mind will be clear and I think he's going to achieve Jordan's level.

Comparing Odom to Pippen, Odom is not what Pippen is. Pippen was way more offensive player,more aggressive and more sharpshooter. Odom is a good player but he's not helping Kobe as much as Lakers need. Kobe is the best player in NBA but he's getting tired cause he's all alone...Everything is on his shoulders and Odom and the rest is not enough. I hope next year (2007) we bring a great player to increase our chances for more NBA glories

Odom can be that guy- remember the Chicago Bulls championship days? They had Jordan & Pippen- and you couldn't really consider Pippen a "super-star". They just had a ton of role players who knew their roles. Maybe that's what Mitch Kupchak was aiming for, but perhaps the dynamics of the league has changed and that formula is not longer a recipe for success....

The Lakers have enough guys around Kobe- but the team simply needs to focus more on perimeter defense. No matter how much you score you're still going to lose if you can't stop anybody. Phil Jackson should play only guys who want to play defense and sit guys if they don't want to defend.

I think kobe is the best player in the nba, but ur right he does need that offensive threat 2 take the load off of him. Not taking anything away from lamar but he isn't that big of an offensive threat especially with his 1 for 11 outing no team is afraid of that. Lakers need another superstar alongside Kobe, the guy can't do everything by himself, nobody can do it let's admit it. Even Jordan was'nt by himself.
