How should FO fill roster out around its 2 stars?

Taking Kawhi out, because I think everyone would probably want him.

Would you take Kyrie or Kemba or Butler ?

Or instead take a Danny Green, JJ Redick , Brook Lopez or Favors if you could get any 3 for the 32m cap space. Or you put in 2 or 3 players that you think Lakers should sign. Interested to know people's views!!

Kind of surprising that we didn’t get to keep max space with giving up that much draft compensation. I don’t know if anyone would take less than max, I guess we will just have to see. I’d love to get Collison or Brogdon to pair with JJ Redick as guards.

I also wouldn’t mind getting Tobias Harris if he would come in at around 23 mil per season.

No thank you, he choked in the raptors series.

It is also still very possible to sign a 3rd big name. Lakers can shed bonga and wagners salary’s easily which would put us over 30 mil in space. One of them would come here for 30 mil I’m sure. You gotta remember how much more money they will make in endorsements coming to LA compared to any market. So that extra couple million lost will be easily made up.

I mentioned in the other thread that we have plenty of talent in AD and bron. We don’t need more max guys, if we can stretch our 23-27 million in cap space and spend on a couple of above average players/border line all stars, we can fill out the roster with unselfish vets and shooters. Unselfish semi-stars who play smart, hard, unselfish will help gel the team faster than if three alphas join together. Continuity is once again not on our side so we can’t mash a bunch of players together based on only talent alone

But on a team where he wasn't 1st option, things should be a lot different. But still wouldn't spend all my cap space on him, would rather have Vuc, but don't think we'll have cap space for him.

Don't know if it will be easy, no one wants to help get better. And they don't have picks now to throw in to help get rid of them.

Shooters Shooters and more Shooters. Surround Lebron and AD with floor spacers and that's a recipe for a top 3 record in the west, and a shot at a title.

Nobody big will come via trade. Our assets and pics are gone. And no other team wants to help us. So has to be an UFA. Kemba says he'll take less than max. Maybe Irving would. Or back load the deal as the cap goes up. Or just overspend. We haven't been over the Cap in some years so I think in that case we are allowed to exceed it now? Anyways the luxury tax doesn't kick in until $123mill. And also it's early in negotiations, so no one knows if the Brow will want the kicker or not. And/or whether they can work out the June 6th issue. The cap space could still get back to what it was expected to be.

Lakers were 27th in payroll last season. So not getting why they can't just spend over the CAP the way 26 other teams did, to add to the team.

I am just assuming, but if we want to AD and said hey Kyrie or some other max player wants to join, but we need you to not take trade bonus to make it happen. I think he would decline the bonus to help the team. I mean he has stated winning and legacy over money and turned down a super max from NO, so how important is that 4million if it gets us a better team?

I think for now he’s keeping it because we may not be going after a 3rd max player, so until we got one locked in he will keep the bonus on his side.

Even if he doesn't take trade kicker, its not enough to sign a max player. Even if they find a way to trade Wagner and Bonga, it's still only comes out to 29m. So unless a max guy takes less, forget about Kyrie or Butler or Kawhi. Think I'd rather see them fill roster out with 2,3 tier FA's anyway. Shooters, shooters, shooters!!!

Unless it was Kawhi, than I'd be pissed if Lakers couldn't get him and he wanted to come.

NBA is a soft cap league, meaning you can’t just go spend all the money you want. What it means is basically, you can’t go over the cap on FAs. However if you have a player on your team for 2+ years, for example Kuzma. His cap hit amount would be small but we can go over the cap to pay him more, because the NBA wants to give....

So according to the article link above Lakers will have 23.7 mil if trade completes on July 6th and AD take bonus which is 4.1mil.

So let’s assume trade is still done on July 6th and we convince AD to not take trade bonus. So now we got 27.8 mil to spend.

Then we move Wagner (2mil) and Bonga (1.4mil)

So now we got 27.8 + 2 + 1.4 = 31.2 mil to spend.

I think my math is correct, but basically if a 3rd wants to come here and play, they will take 1-3 mil less other wise they don’t really want to come here.

You can’t go over the cap to sign free agents. Well only with min. contracts and exceptions. Those teams went over by resigning their own players.

It didn't look like Danny Green could guard his own shadow during the playoffs. He had a few moments when he hit some 3's but think I'd rather have Ross at this stage.

And why would the Clips let Beverly go, when he was so instrumental in their making the playoffs and doing as well as they did?

If they want to dump a cple players then sure, let's take PBev and Sweet Lou off their hands Wink

He wasn’t first option in philly but still choked in crunch time in the 4th quarter. In the 4th quarter his stats dropped off hardcore. His FG% was 31.3 and 3p% was 16.7 this year in the playoffs. Especially in that raptors series in crunch time he couldn’t hit a shot for the life of him in the 4th. If he came cheaper I’d be all for it. But to use up all or most of our cap space, I’d rather use it on a lot of other people first. Just my opinion though.

If he declines his trade kicker we can get to $28,303,326 by my calculations factor in cap holds on empty roster spots. So if we could trade away bonga and Wagner which I think Wagner will be easy for somebody to take. Not as sure on bonga then we can get to $30,154,988. That includes cap holds on empty roster spots for the two leaving.

The question I have is bonga’s contract guaranteed? I just don’t see the lakers with their thinking would give him a fully guaranteed contract but who knows.

Also the NBA has other exception to allow team to improve their team.

Vet - Vet minimum contract

Basically NBA is like hey we don’t want you to go over the cap, but we want you to be able to keep your players. So here are some loop holes to get over the cap.

Also have the room exception as well.

One thing I can't stand right now and I am not saying it's a lie, is that fact that currently AD will not waive his trade bonus. Why would he waive it right now, before he even knows if the Lakers need him to waive it sign guys.

Personally I 100% believe if they go to him and say hey we need you to waive that bonus and we are moving Wagner and Bonga, because "Top Free Agent" will sign with us for 29 mil. Then AD will waive the bonus. AD as stated numerous times, he is about legacy not money. So if Kyrie or Kwahi says give me 29 mil and I will sign, then I think AD will waive his bonus.

I am 50/50 on if we should try to get a 3rd star or split the money between 2-3 guys.

No my understanding is that you only have to count 12 slots towards cap. So we have 5 under contract so we would only have to have 7 empty slots worth of cap space and the charge for an empty roster spot is right around $815,000. So you would just take that $815,000 x 7 plus the rest of our salary's that will be owed to the other 5 and then add in Luol Dengs $5,000,000.

Would love Lopez back from Milwaukee, but he probably won't come.back.......and while we are on the subject of not coming back, it would be very interesting if the Nets get Kyrie and decide not to bring DLO back. I think he is the kind of point guard that would actually work well with LBJ as he is a better shooter than Zo.

The 6ers need less stars. Not more. No to Lopez coming back. All of a sudden he’s very overrated. He should go to New Orleans to space the floor for Zion & Ball.

Other than being highly aware of the desire for AD, we don't know much, iif anything, about the Lakers next moves. The rest is cast in shadows. Yes they are looking at Kemba among others. So is everyone else. But we don't have a clear picture of the plan, or what they can, or are willing, to spend.

Strange that when Lopez was here with the Lakers very few really liked the guy. I liked him except I did not like him standing around the perimeter shooting threes. A man 7' tall should post more then what he done. Leave the long shooting to the guards and small forwards, not for centers that tall. What a waste of a tall man that could post up and just dunk and protect the paint, plus he would have been good at getting rebounds. So I do blame the coaching on that letting Lopez do as he pleased OR maybe the coaches told him to shoot threes. Not sure who was to blame, but I never did like that part of Lopez game and I did not like it with the Bucks either.

But their are not too many good centers out there that are free agents that are tall and would not want the pay of a LeBron. I was surprised how many centers are free agents. Just have to find the right one, but there is a list on the web of about fifty free agent centers,

With AD and the King, I'm thinking a defensive-minded, unselfish guard who can knock down the 3-ball would be perfect for the team; that's why is why it hurts to lose Ball. Even though he's definitely not a reliable 3-ball gunner, he was having a solid season before the injury and really contributed to a respectable Laker defense. Once he got injured, the entire defense went to crap, and Rondo (like many other players at the bottom end of a long career) proved he isn't the all-defensive team player he once was half a decade ago.

I don't know that DLo fits the bill. He'd need a lot of shots to be happy.

Let’s assume the worst case scenario comes to pass and AD won’t waive the kicker and the trade goes down July 6th. I personally don’t think this is true, but let’s follow that assumption. The reported 23.6 million is a little misleading in that is how much we could spend on one free agent while maintaining cap holds for the other 6 empty spots that we would need to get to 12. If we look at how much we have to fill the roster it’s actually closer to 30 million plus the room exemption. 23.6 is not enough to lure a superstar so let’s throw that out. The first thing I’d do is retain Bullock’s cap hold and wait to resign him to a multi year deal until after everything else is fleshed out. $5 million dollars is the cheapest you will find for a quality shooter which Bullock has proven to be. He is also a better defender than some of the shooters mentioned earlier. I’d also go to KCP and ask him to take either the vet minimum for one year after which we would have full bird rights on him and can give him a better contract next offseason if if proves to deserve it. So for essentially $6 million dollars we’ve filled two spots and addressed shooting guard leaving $24 million for the last four spots, with point guard and center being the priority. Leave 2 spots as cap holds allowing a little over 22 for the remaining two spots. Patrick Beverly would be my choice at point guard for $12 million(Malcolm Brogden would actually be my first choice at $16 million but as a RFA that’s risky). He can defend his butt of and hit the three. If not him Darren Collison....

Was reading that Milwaukee is definitely in a pinch in keeping Lopez, Brogden and Middleton. I know they would keep Middleton and they are shopping Snell and Illyasova to free up more money, BUT if it doesn't happen, I would love to see us go for Brogden. He would DEFINITELY be a great fit. Collison I think would be a decent fit, too. Veteran starter that can fit any situation. I would love to see the Laker consider Terrance Ross, I think would be a decent player to go after. Bullock seems to be the forgotten shooter that we can get quickly and either Morris twins would be a nice addition. Also Hollis-Jefferson is a free-agent and could be gotten a decent defender off the bench and may not be expensive. Oh forgot about Seth Curry, good shooter and can be a secondary playmaker while on the floor with LeBron.

If the Lakers can go for depth, they can be good, if they still trying to chase stars then...

Good assessment, mcbill!!!

I read in some article that to persuade the Pelicans to not finalize the trade until say July 30th that the lakers could further sweeten the deal with the Pelicans, but the problem might be if they tried to swap the 4th pick the other team may want their pick immediately. So my question is, would a sign and trade with Toronto for a deminimus amount work to facilitate a trade that could conceivably go into effect before the davis trade. Would that not allow us to get the full 32 million, via trade...Wagner Bonga etc?

A lot of your guys know the other team's players more than I do. I trust your judgement. Sounds like there's several good options out there. Let's hope the FO can spackle together a team, and not rest on their laurels after the AD deal. There's work to be done.

do people prefer another star or role players?

my opinion is it’s soooo much harder to get a star and we won’t have money in coming years. i saw go for it if we can get kawhi, kyrie, or kemba. i’m 50/50 on butler.

2nd question, of role players, who do people prefer?

personally i’d go for some combo of austin rivers, seth curry, jamal crawford, patrick beverly. doubt middleton or brogdon become available. thoughts?....

I personally would rather sign another star and here is my reasoning. Right now we will have 3 guys but lebron doesn't have much time left so once he is done then we are left with one star. If we can get AD and another star locked up for several years then we can continue to fill in the roster with roll players. Especially this year i don't think we are going to have any issues filling out the rest of the roster with cheap roll players. Especially if we get another star. There have already been people who said they would sign a cheaper deal to contend.

Here would be the first 4 guys I would sign if I was the Lakers.

    Patrick Beverly

    Seth Curry

    JJ Redick

    Rajon Rondo

Marcus Morris only made 5 mil last year with Celtics, I don't have any clue on his market, but he be great pick up also.

I don't think we could get all 5 of those guys at there market value, but maybe they take less to play here for a ring. From what I've read, Beverly and JJ probably get around 10 mil each if they want. Rondo really wants to come back here and play with us, maybe he takes a vet minimum?

Starters: Beverly / JJ / Kuz / Lebron / AD

Bench: Rondo / Seth / Wayne / Morris / Wagner

I LOVE the idea of getting Beverly. His Tenacity on D and 3 point shooting is exactly what we need around these guys. I also like JJ and Rondo as long as price is right. I also think the lakers need to make caruso a priority as well and his market price shouldn't be too high to afford. Caruso can play the 1 or 2 so he could still play next to rondo if needed. I also like having Morris too. But we all know that Melo is almost certainly coming for a bench role for this team next year. Almost a guarantee i would say.

Don't know which center but I definitely think we need one, than bring back McGee on vet minimum to come of bench.

Don't want to see AD at the 5 ,at least not full time. Seasons he's stayed most healthy have been when they had him playing most at 4.

If we don't play AD at center, then I feel like Kuzma will have to go to the bench. I don't think the Lakers are going to do that. I don't think Kuzma would be very good playing 2 and chasing around all these small 2 guards running off screens full time.
