Ivica Zubac worked all summer to make his body leaner and his game more effective in hopes that his third season in the NBA would be one during which he showed he belonged. His body had other plans. “I just got sick like three days before training camp as I was coming back before the [Croatian] national team,” said Zubac, who turns 22 in March. “All that time difference change, different weather. It got me bad. I don’t know how I got through the training camp because it was super hard.” Zubac lost about 20 pounds as he dealt with an illness that made him feverish and sluggish. He might as well have lost all 270 pounds of himself. In the Lakers world, it essentially made him invisible. He wasn’t getting playing time. He wasn’t performing like he knew he could. He wasn’t getting a chance to contribute. All anyone talked about was that JaVale McGee was the Lakers’ only viable option at center. As Zubac got stronger, he started to feel more like himself. On Thursday, Zubac became a critical force in the Lakers’ overtime win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. Zubac scored a career-high 26 points, making 12 of 14 shots, and had 12 rebounds. Most importantly, he battled with Thunder center Steven Adams, imposing his physicality on Adams. “He was big around the rim and he’s got a really nice soft touch down there,” Lakers coach Luke Walton said. “Some of it’s his teammates are looking for him, when he gets that ball around the rim, he’s pretty good at finishing. But where he’s really grown is becoming more physical. I think playing behind Tyson [Chandler] and JaVale this season has really helped with that. Because he’s setting solid screens every time now.” The Lakers drafted Zubac at 19, knowing he’d take some....

Please keep Zubac! He's really good! But trade anyone for AD!

If the trade occurs i believe he is the only player i could regret for. He has the tools to be great back to the basket big man, soft touch and will be a consistent 10-10-2 in this league, if he continues i won't be shocked he can average 30-20. If he can approach Pau Gasol and teach some post moves and some passing he is a force! Only 21 and made a tremendous impact. Big man like him is rare and he is our best free throw shooter

That’s why on another thread I was wondering if we really need to gut out the team for AD. What if we get both Cousins and Kyrie and keep most (or some) of the pieces intact? We could still have Zubac backing up Cousins. We could also have him sometimes play the starting C (according to matchups) thus allowing Cousins to play his “favored” 4.

Kyrie and Lebron somehow intrigues me more than AD and Lebron. I don’t know why I feel that with Lebron, Ad would be reduced to another Bosh or Kevin Love living outside the perimeter and jacking up 3’s. Let’s not forget Lebron and Kyrie along with a bunch of role players on the roster, took out the 73 win GSW. They have the proven formula to beat them.

I had the same concern about Lebrons fit with AD. But a part of me wants to believe AD is too good to be relegated to that role and Lebron is a smarter player than to not utilize him to his strengths. Yet Lebron has shown he only knows how to play one way.

I don’t think Kyrie will come to LA. But I do think DMC will be a Laker. I do think Magic values our young core more than we give him credit for. I’m glad I’m not in his position because we have a great core with ample opportunities to add to it while they get better. But I’ve said that Anthony Davises and Giannis Antetokounmpos don’t come around pretty much at all. Tall, coordinated, athletic players who is gifted on both ends of the floor. Is it worth giving up 3 plus impact players for one of these guys? Would we fare better waiting for free agency while giving the youngsters more time to develop and keep our mortgage for the future?

I agree with you to a certain extent about AD. He’s a transcendent talent for sure and would probably thrive as the second option alongside Lebron. What worries me is the fact that it took Rondo to get him over the hump and help him win his first playoff series in 7 attempts. However the cream should be able rise to the top. Maybe the solo gig in NO was too much to shoulder.

As far as Kyrie goes if you had asked me last week, I would say no way Jose. However the cryptic rap song on Instagram while tagging Kyrie and then Kyrie’s phone call to Lebron in an attempt to mend fences have made me open to the possibility of a reunion. Also several reports that Kyrie might not re-sign with the Celts has given some traction to that notion. I’m still not counting on it, but it wouldn’t totally surprise me if it did materialize.

Think the million dollar question in all this is how much Pels and other teams value core. Keep hearing reports some teams either like them or don't at all.

I just posted a tweet on the other thread. They are going to inform teams that the lakers are AD’s preferred destination.

Why not. Warriors have had that for awhile now.

It will help, but think there are still teams that will take a chance and trade for him and hope they can get him to stay. Pretty sure Lakers aren't going to be Pels preferred destination for him. Lol

Lakers are going to have to offer the whole farm and than some.
