With all the talk about Lebron and Randle and Rondo then the stunning news about Golden State winning the title next year with the signing of Cousins there has been plenty to discuss here. Going to a forgotten Laker, my good friend The Baptist sent me this interesting article a few moments ago about Ivica Zubac. Zubac of course is the very young center we drafted who was a project that unexpectedly really showed game in the second half of his rookie year. This made me and others here take notice. Unfortunately last year he really didn't build on that success....

He dominated in Gleague last season, ain't NBA. Stand by what I said when he was drafted, could be a " decent backup ".

He just needs some toughness. I thought we'd see signs of it this past season.

Pete,

Yep. The other thing that disappointed me last season was how many easy shots he missed. Maybe that's why he's dunking so much over there lol.

He needs to improve on that too.

I also didn't like how he seemed to always fall with ease either.

SPQR,

Also fan of Zubac, and wishing he gets some decent playing time and trust this year. He's got the body, he's got the moves he just needs the athleticism to start progressing his career I think.

Having said that, and being a European myself, the basketball World Championship qualifiers are not the most trustworthy tournament to make some basketball conclusions on. Croatia is one of the top 5 European teams at the moment, and the opponents they have been playing with (other than Italy which is borderline top10) is of very very very low quality. It's the first year World Championship is having qualifiers like that in Europe (with games throughout the year and bigger number of teams) and basically games Croatia vs. Romania are like GSW playing against a G-League team.

Still, I hope everything goes well for Zubac and he keeps producing with his team, and with Lakers Smile

Shaq,

Thanks for the low down on that World Cup. I appreciate that.

I agree with you that there was something there his rookie year that caught my eye. He does have some skill and a big body.

I think your remark about athleticism dovetails with the missed shots and Pete's remark about him falling down.

I'm not sure what he can be yet because he is so young and raw. He has shown good as a, rookie and not good last year. Even if he turns out a good back up as Kkennon said that is a plus.

Like you I hope he gets some trust and PT this year. I hope he plays well enough in camp and preseason to e earn those things.

How old is Zu now, like 21 years old. Still plenty of time to become what ever he wants to become. And I think he wants it. Last year may be a fluke. I heard he spent a lot of time prior to last year working on his 3 and then didn't really get any opportunities to shoot it. He should have been working to get better at the game he is good at. It just confuses the mind of some young guys who are trying to become something they are not. Once you master your trade, then you work at adding things to your arsenal. But first things first. If we don't sign another center, we just may get to find out what this young kid has got next year.

Randy. I am a fan of Zubac. I don't believe he had enough play yet to showcase his talents. He didn't show his best when he had his few chances last year, but he in my opinion has the ability to be a nice player. I think he can be better than advertised. He's shown me enough that he can be better than shown. I think he should start as our center right now, above Mcgee. He's young, has a lot of potential, and has so much yet to grow.

BTW, I commented on one of your other threads about losing our star youth right now for Kawhi Leonard. I'm so against it. Let's wait til next year whe he can come without losing our core youth. I want to grow with Ingram, Kuzma, and Ball, and am pretty upset losing Randle, a player that fought every second of every game he played. We don't need to win right this second. I'm a future guy, and will wait a year if it makes our team better for the long hall. The old saying "why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free" is where I'm at now. Let's go this year with what we have and add the next best Laker player in Leonard, next year.

Jamfan,

I agree that the verdict on Zubac is still out. He is very young. I still am intrigued that he may be something more than just a guy.

Lakerdude!

Man so nice to see you. I didn't see your other post yet but I will go read it.

Yeah, I'm hoping the best of Zubac is yet to come. And that best will be pretty good.

Yeah the Randle thing stunk. Is he a perfect player? No. But in my view some people here undervalued what he does do.

Not many players just are so physical and attack so relentlessly. He just wore down and discouraged other players and teams. That's not an easy or common thing. And he didn't just do it, he loved it, thrived on it.

On top of that he could run and pass.

There were a lot of games last year we were in trouble and players like Ball, Ingram, Kuzma and the vets curled up in a ball and went away only to have Randle will them back into the game and often the win with his battering ram take no prisoners style of play.

We won at least ten more games last year because of him.

He was the only physical presence on that whole team.

This team will not look or be the same without him.

I think they made a mistake.

Also read today we could have had Cousins but passed for Rondo. WTF? Don't we already have Ball, Magic's face of the franchise? Isn't center our weakest positition?

Huh?
