So Lakers did pick up one of Houstons players, cut to make room for Josh Smith...

Tarik Black: another PF/C to try out, might as well right?

Tarik Black is average 4 points and 5 rebounds in 15 minutes- not bad for a backup big. Too bad about Xavier Henry- hopefully he heals up well and returns to the NBA next season.

He is a rookie. What other young guys are getting cut for trades? Lakers should look to use their injury exception for Nash and waive him.

Think they're still trying to use Nash contact in trade. Doesn't do anything for them to waive him.

Where did that number come from? He is listed as 6' 8" on draft express. Additionally, in my email exchange with Chris, he noted that Tarik was a "good offensive rebounder, fouls a lot, and does a decent job at times in the pick and roll on offense," which is a description that should resonate with fans of the Rockets given their penchant for drafting undersized, yet strong power forwards with high motors. Wingspans are usually a big factor as well. Tarik hits all of the high points. In his workout with the Clippers before the draft, Tarik measured 6' 7.5" without shoes but sported an impressive 7' 2.5" wingspan and an 8' 11" standing reach. Scouting reports on the guy routinely validate his rebounding prowess and his strength. http://www.thedreamshake.com/2014/11/7/7172543/houston-rockets-tarik-b lack-possibility-waiting Also from the above link Tarik Black: the guy most likely to commit more fouls than field goals made. Right now he's made two shots and committed seven fouls. The best thing about him is that we can call him Coffee Black. He's a poor man's Kendrick Perkins, and Perkins is already on NBA welfare. Mike de Moor An undersized backup center for when your other undersized backup centers signed to multi-year deals still aren't good enough. Adequately sized backup centers need not apply. Ethan Rothstein Concluding Thoughts Tarik's playing style and demeanor does a good job of making the underdog label stick and maybe for that reason alone I will be rooting for him. Black's ability to competently rotate in an NBA defense and ability to finish at the rim will be crucial determinant of his value to the Rockets moving forward. Maybe Tarik ends up being just another 6-foot whatever power forward that simply can't put it together in enough dimensions of the game to retain the value necessary for a roster spot, but for now he's got opportunities in....

Why would you waive a $9million expiring contract when you could get something in return

I dunno, just feels like the Lakers might not be getting any takers for that expiring that they want. They may just use it as an expiring for themselves and value the cap room. I am saying use that 4.5m exception they got I guess or whatever. Just eager for some young guys to watch and try out instead of guys who can't play or aren't gunna be here next year. Look for some more quality bench players like Ed Davis.

Eh, I dunno, get a young point and/or small forward and waive Price. Bring in a couple of the hot Defenders and give them a chance. Might as well search for gems out there right? The season is a wash

Think you're right, lakers want a player like Rondo in return or 1st round picks. Things might change as it gets closer to trade deadline.

Detroit are 6 games back for a playoff spot, The lakers are 7 1/2games. No team is going to blow it up just now. In another 15 - 20 games teams are going to know where they are at and the trade madness will begin.

With Brooklyn among others, looking to blow it up and get rid of some huge contracts, I see us being a valuable partner in 3 team trades.

Don't know much about this kid but reading the comments sections on the articles lots of people are saying this kid has a good motor like Jordan Hill or Ed Davis and is pretty good on defense. You can always use a guy like that off the bench.

Draft express takes their measurements from the draft combine which is the only true accurate source for measurements.

Either way i like this pickup since it gives the lakers a cheap hustle guy to replace jordan hill if they trade him.

I really hope he is kidding, however..

I think that the Lakers are probably getting calls from teams needing help in the front court and they saw a guy they could potentially polish into a nice bench piece if they trade hill or davis or both. Blacks numbers are the same as jordan hill when jordan was getting 15 mpg and he has done a nice job in developing into a decent player. Tarik is a rookie who won't influence winning much this season but could develop into a nice bench big men. It's not like this signing hurts the tank either.

I'm so excited about this signing. Once he gets acclimated to this high-powered offense and suffocating defense we should finish 4th or 5th in the standings. It looks like Mitch may get executive of the year.

Save any judgement till much later in the season.

Best wishes to X, hope he heals up clean and comes back. He was by far my favorite young guy the Lakers had picked up the last 2 years...as luck would have it injuries took away a shot for him to shine. I think he has it.

Lakers are smart to give this young big a shot as well. They need to find young bigs.

Tarik Black said he's 6-9 but Mitch Kupchak, who was listed at 6-9, seemed to have several inches on him.

Yeah he is about 6'7 1/2 which is why he blocks an incredible 0.1 shots per game. He will be a nice undersized hustle player off the bbench though. Ala chuck hayes .

It's been so long since our front office landed a big name, that even when they sign a rookie that is being tossed aside by a competitor, they make him sound like a superstar, and the fans buy it.

Not sure whether this is a good signing or not. Time will tell. But his numbers suck eggs, if he's supposed to be a great center. Look at it this way, he's being brought in to back up Sacre. That about says it all, doesn't it? How bad does a guy have to be in order to be on the second team behind Sacre? Maybe he has more potential, but obviously Houston didn't think so, and his numbers are consistent with them getting rid of him. I've bought the bait several times when our front office was promoting a new guy or guys on the team. None of them really worked out, ever!

Howard, Nash, Xavier Henry,. .. .. .. .. There are a lot of guys who failed to live up to unrealistic expectations promoted by our front office.

Once again, there is no indication that a real trade is in the works here. The story here is that Houston gave him the boot, and the Lakers may give him an opportunity to try out with the team. No signing, no real indication of anything happening with the Lakers at all. Just another rumor, because the guy is no longer property of Houston. As I said above, look at his numbers. They are really bad.

The guy wasn't even drafted, so that tells you a lot right there. But I did watch him play in a few rocket's games while coward was out, didn't look bad for unsigned FA. And yes I watch rocket games, hoping they lose as many as possible. Get's us a higher pick.

Black can bang, but the big man who was waived to make roster space available, that I would have liked to have seen picked up, is Vitor Faverani.

Well, as much as I would like to say Mitch and the scouting staff can't manage to recognize talent and go for it .Faverani was hurt and was a bit of a problem child in the beginning of the season, so I can see why LA skipped him. But I still believe the scouting department seems to drop the ball on recognizing talent international or otherwise. After fifteen games the team should have seen this was going nowhere. (Some on here didn't need to wait 15 games before they knew we were done.) and since the Lakers are built for "win now", the scouting team is probably not very strong. It would be nice if the Lakers hired full time scouts. But, I don't know what they do behind the scenes and who does what, why or where, but from the looks of this team the results may be a little telling.

Personally, I don't hold a lot of hope for Black to save the day for the Lakers. He may contribute, but his numbers aren't that good, and he was cut by Houston. What makes you guys think this is a good signing? Yes, we need a backup center for Sacre, but do you feel how strange that is? Sacre in first place, with Black backing him up? We still suck. His addition doesn't add very much as I see it.

It's just a small move, this signing. It's a good sign that they are doing small moves. Maybe it's means Sacre will get traded, or maybe he is just a young rookie to try to develop. Either way it isn't going to make or break anything. But they cut Henry (to make room) who sadly probably isn't gunna come back from this injury. I have always said the way he plays is an injury waiting to happen, and his time here has been a lot of "coming off injuries" and whatnot. Soooo Black may or may not make a big difference, but he is replacing an injured guy who isn't coming back, so no worries. I do like his attitude and I think it's great that he is a vocal defender.

Unfortunately a lot of people here think every signing is a good signing.

If it turns out we trade Sacre for any kind of pick sure it makes sense. Otherwise what's the point? Are we even going to use the exceptions we were given? What happened to Earl Clark? I take Clark over this guy all day every day.

Watch this guy in college last season while hoping for Wiggins, he's a guy that going to come in and bang, get rebounds and hustle. He didn't look bad when Coward was out in Houston. He's not going to be a starter, but could be good player off the bench.
