Jim Buss's declaration to turn the Lakers around or quit was as bold as it was unusual. In all my years of watching sports I have never heard of an owner who also was so involved in player operations making this kind of promise. There is danger there for him. Also possible danger for the team if he rushes to full fill his stated obligation.

While we all hope that in four years the Lakers will have a contender, nothing is guaranteed. Injuries, bad drafts, chemistry, whether free agents want to come all play a part. And will they be able to get a bonafide superstar, one of the best players in ball, which they will almost certainly need to be true contenders, either through the draft or free agency? There takes a lot of skill and yes, luck in building a contender. With a three or four year window of the promise, Buss leaves himself precious little room for error.

A few other thoughts: Will this affect how Buss does a rebuild? Will he find it safer to trade more draft picks, including this years, to get veterans here and try to contend fast? That is where danger may come to play for the team and it's future. If he goes for broke again, like with Howard and Nash, because he feels his promise now forces fast action and makes mistakes in doing so. Or will he take a patient approach that will most likely come very close to his self imposed deadline?

The other thing I wonder is will others in the organization hope he fails. Take Jeanie Buss for example. If she covets the job her brother now has, would she be happier to see him fail, and perhaps ascend to that position herself in four years, than see him succeed and be relegated to her current position for good?

And if Jim fails, would Jeanie be the one to take his spot? One assumes so. Or would it be Kupchak? Or given the failure in working with Jim to make the promise work, would Kupchak also be a causality and lose his job as well? Then would we be looking for replacements for both Buss and Mitch? If not Jeanie or Mitch, then maybe some else? Either way, with Mitch and Jim falling on their swords, that would be the biggest front office shake up in Lakers history since Dr. Buss bought the team.

Lastly, one also wonders if Jim would view a contender as something different than I our you would. I mean look at say New Jersey. If that was our team in four years, a similar team with similar capabilities, would Buss then view his goal as met? I don't consider New Jersey to be a true, honest to goodness title contender. In other words, sometimes, a contender is in the eye of the beholder, or perhaps in Buss's case, the owner.

A very bold, unusual statement by Jim Buss with plenty of possible ramifications to play out.

And because he set that deadline, and if he is true to his word, the clock starts ticking....right now.

Another good blog Randy- thanks for the writeup! You make a good point in that now Jim Buss has put extra pressure on himself, time pressure it seems, to turn things around. While he didn't seem to specify the time frame, or the specific level of success to measure a turn around, you certainly hope he doesn't make rash moves, but rather smart, long term sustainable ones instead.

Repped High Quality Post

Actions speak louder than words. It's easy to make a statement, it's difficult to deal with opponents who are already there. I think he's just trying to keep season ticket holders in their seats. Once they are committed to the season, he's got their cash in hand. I don't believe that he can produce what his mouth has committed him to.

Only time will tell. I would love to be wrong about this, but the lack of any steps towards fixing the obvious defects in this team during the past two seasons are telling.

I'm sure Jimbo will get an earful from the season ticket holders and TWC before the season starts? I'm not optimistic about the Lakers future as some are on other threads. Based on the seasons past and the error of his ways, he should step down now. At least his old man had PJ to come to the rescue, but for Jimbo there is no one. PJ in NY, is not acceptable to me as a diehard Laker Fan. I expect Kobe to go out tied with Magic with 5 Blings. 3 years post Kobe, not really that optimistic either. There has to be a paradigm shift in the Buss Family to right this ship soon. First good move the Lakers could do is give the boot to No D Antni!

What if he is THAT confident? What if he has something up his sleeve? I mean we did get Dwight and Nash, which at the time everyone was hyped about, maybe we can do it again with Jim.

The only thing he has under his sleeve is a TWC rash! I am but one of a few who did not like the trade for Nash or Howard. Trading for a 40 year old PG with brittle bones and D12 who didn't want to be here in the first place. Face it, the reason D12 left was the FO choice of a coach. No D Antni was run out of NY and should be run out of LA too! He is a horrible coach! Always at the bottom for his teams in Team Defense Rankings and defense wins championships. Guess next season, TWC's viewership rankings will drop below from 46% to an even lower number. Face it nobody wants to watch the Lakers anymore with this abomination of a 2014 season! TWC will be scrambling to renegotiate that contract! Imagine $100 nosebleed seats and D-League Performance? What a combo and a major embarrassment for the FO when they fail to sell out Staples for more than 9(2014) games next season.

Oh well another lost decade as this bozo will keep defrauding loyal Laker fans of their pride in this team and their money. Jimbo will keep feeding you the cheese, that it will be better next year. The 2014-2015 season will be no different than the seasons past, as the Laker Senior Citizens will really feel their age.

Next seasons starting line up

Nash , kobe, young, Kelly, sacre

As long as kobe is the face and D'Antoni is the coach Lakers will suck. Kobe going to be chasing scoring titles. Looks like we will have our lottery pick next year

Can't argue with any of this... assuming MDA is retained.
