Colin Cowherd of ESPN radio is running a interesting national poll. Which sports franchise is the best in history? Naturally the Lakers are a top contender. He set up the brackets like the NCAA tournament; the Lakers rightfully by their stellar history getting a number one seed. In the first round they put a ferocious beat down on the NFL Miami Dolphins, winning a 85% to 15% blowout over the proud Dolphin franchise. No contest. Now in the second bracket, the sweet sixteen our intrepid Lakers are crushing hockey's Toronto Maple Leafs 86 to 14 percent. We will be moving onto the great....

Pete,

Me too, Lakers and Steelers.

I fear the Yankees and Canadians in the end. It will take a massive effort by other teams fans to beat the obvious favorites.

Yankees have to be. Other contenders would be celtics, Lakers, Steelers & Cowboys.

As far as championships. Gotta be Yankees. In terms of basketball, Celtics definitely. I don't care about the rivalry, gotta give respect when its due.

Granted they have more championships (celtics) but they have also missed the playoffs multiple times the lakers have missed the playoffs 6 times (including this year) in their history. I repeat SIX times. That is a successful franchise

For NBA If you just count titles it's Celtics, barely, but overall success isn't even close.

Gotta look at the Cardinals in baseball with the 2nd most championships next to the Yankees. They get absolutely amazing bang for their buck...and the fan support is phenomenal in a relatively small market.

Still, I'd go with the Lakers, especially considering the LONG lifeless drought the Celtics had.

I say for basketball, the lakers. When you count winning seasons and championships. Baseball, Yankees 27 titles enough said, football steelers have most rings, but cowboys have most super bowl appearances.

Actually the Steelers and Boys are tied in SB appearances with 8 each.

Besides having the most SB championships, two other factors besides most rings put the Steelers over the Boys. The Steel Curtain team of the seventies is considered the greatest team of all time. Second, in head to head SB matchups, the Steelers hold the 2-1 lead over the Boys.

The Boys just don't measure up. And that is how it should be.

The Steelers sit atop the NFL hierarchy with no challengers at the moment.

Repped High Quality Post

THE LAKERS:

-66 years in the league

-60 playoff appearances

-5,190 games played

-3,192 wins

-1,998 losses

-.615 winning%

-32 division titles

-18 conference titles

-16 championships

THE CELTICS:

-68 years in the league

-51 playoff appearances

-5,301 games played

-3,131 wins

-2,170 losses

-.591 winning%

-30 division titles

-9 conference titles

-17 championships

SUMMARY: Even Though The Lakers have 2 less years in the league, They have won more games, have had more playoff appearances, have a higher winning percentage, have more division titles, more conference titles. All the while having less losses. Yes The Celtics have 1 more championship but The Celtics have also missed the playoffs 17 TIMES!!! (compared to The Lakers 6). Not to mentions that The Lakers have won most of their titles in the "modern era" Since 1970 The Lakers have won 11 Championships to The Celtics 6. And since 1980 The Lakers have won 10 Championships to The Celtics 4. With The Lakers winning 3 out the 5 head to head Finals matchups since then. The bottom line is that The Lakers have been the most consistent franchise throughout the existence of The NBA. The Lakers are the ONLY team that has been to a NBA Final in EVERY decade since the 1940's!!

P.s. A little unknown Laker trivia: The Lakers actually have a "17th" Championship. They won The 1948 NBL Championship a year before joining The NBA.

THE NBL: Founded in 1937, the National Basketball League (NBL) was a professional men's basketball league in the United States. The league would later dissolve and some of its teams would be absorbed into the Basketball Association of America (BAA) to form the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1949.

They are the BEST Period! If the 2nd Gen Ownership (Jimbo) doesn't beat the statistics( 90% failure rate), you can replace are with were(past tense)!

Craig,

All good points.

A case can be made that the Lakers are the best NBA team ever. Not only with your very good stats but here are some more.

We have more playoff games than Boston, have won the most playoff games in NBA history and have the higher playoff winning percentage:

The Lakers have won 397 playoff games with 265 losses for winning percentage of .600 compared to the Celtics total of 304 playoff wins, losing 220 for a winning percentage of .580

Another thing is we have two dynasties, the Mikan one and Showtime. Boston had just one, the Russ Celts, although to be fair that was one spectacular run. But it is the only period in Celtic history that makes them what they are. If Celtic fans want to call the Bird Celts a dynasty then the Lakers get another with the Shaq-Kobe group because both those teams won three rings each. Also, the Bird years are negated to a degree because even though they were a special, very successful team, they were not as special or successful as their own contemporaries, Magic's Lakers.

I can understand why Celtic fans think their team is the best franchise in NBA history and I'm sure if our places were reversed, we would feel the same. But the Lakers do have a legit claim to that disputed title. It is no open and shut case for either team.

My friends, we better enjoy these stats while we can. I fear Jimmy will run us into the ground and that run will be over. Then again it doesn't look like the Celtics are going anywhere either. So at least there is that....

Well,

The Lakers did beat out Boston by a surprisingly large margin 56% to 44% to advance to the Final Four against the Yankees. Interesting that a national poll has the Lakers the better franchise. I'm sure some of the rabid Celt fans not to happy about that result. Are the Lakers viewed nationally by sports fans as the better, more storied franchise now?

Sadly, but predictably and yes, the Yankees are killing us 64%-36%. So if anyone wants us to make it more representative for us get on there and vote.

In the other Final Four, my Steelers who beat out the Bulls are going against the Packers who defeated the Cowboys. The Packers are leading that one 51 to 49 percent.

Well with us beating out the c's i guess we are the best franchise in the nba. I doubt we beat the yankees. Been around longer, many hall of famers and way more titles.

Honestly this debate can go on forever but to me it just depends on what was on the TV in your mom and pops home or where you were from. In our household it was Cowboys and LAkers. We weren't a baseball household. I do remember when I was young you were either Cowboys, Raiders, Steelers, 49ers, Packers and for basketball Lakers, Celtics, 76ers and Pistons. I happened to gravitate towards the Cowboys and Lakers.......So it just depends on who you ask.

Axle,

Well, I sit at work and it is a choice between Cowherd or music. I take Cowherd till Russillo comes on. Not that interested in hearing him and his partner talk about his weight lifting and their private lives and crack unfunny jokes for hours. I mean how do they get away with it? Talk SPORTS! Not interested in what you did last night dude. How do people listen to this stuff, why are they interested? Nothing p*sses me off more than listening to sports show hosts talk about themselves, their families, their girl friends or music or what they ate last night or whatever, everything but sports.

Back to Cowherd. Yes he can be abrasive. He is very confident about what he thinks and knows, but then, so am I. But to be honest Axle, I agree with him about 90 percent of the time, or he agrees with me, lol. He looks at things realistically and with logic. He doesn't let emotion affect his judgement. I'm the same way. I think a lot of people don't like him because he says things as they really are, not how some fans want to imagine things are or what they want to hear. He looks at things clearly and with his head. They also don't like him because he is very confident and strong in these same opinions. I like him. There are some things he has said I don't agree with, but who agrees with someone all the time? On the whole at least in my view, he knows his stuff. Much more than other sports show hosts I have heard. And he talks about SPORTS.

Purpleknight: REPPED for the good stats and showing people it's not just about the titles but consistency. If West was at the helm for five more year we may have won at least two more rings since he wouldn't have let the role players age like a carton of milk left on the counter.

Hmm. How in the world did the Celtics end up with only 9 conference titles considering all those NBA championships and so many of them in a row too? Is that stat really correct? They were dominant for a long time to say the least.
