Interesting article by Plaschke in L.A. Times this morning about why the Lakers may have sent D'antoni as part of the meeting, and why Kobe supposedly gave him the tough love pitch. They never really wanted him here. Just want to get your opinions.

I agree, Dwight was not the guy we were hoping for.

In my mind, and I'm not just saying this now because he left us, I don't think Dwight would've spent the rest of his career with us. Not saying he would've left after his contract expired but, we would've traded him. The front office was bound to see that Dwight couldn't do all the things required to be THE man for Los Angeles. I assumed after 2014 if they didn't like his performance, they would've shipped him out. I bet that's why they tried so hard to keep him. They wanted to hang on to him so they can get pieces when and if they decided to trade him.

From the numbers perspective, I think Lakers DID wanted him back. The banners, the tweet hash tags, and the constant "future of the franchise" ploy by Mitch said just as much. THE LAKERS FAILED MISERABLY FOR THE PAST 3 SEASONS.

IMO, even if the Lakers didn't like Dwight as a franchise player, I would think that they at least hated it more that they would be losing him at such a huge cost from bringing him in. No Bynum, no Earl Clark, AND picks lost for acquiring him, AND Nash. When the Lakers traded away Shaq, LA at LEAST got picks and Odom out of it. LA should look into a S&T with Houston, get a TPE, AND picks out of it.

Interesting article.

I believe things happen for a reason.

Dwight is a good player but it wasn't the right fit. He prefers to play sidekick to Harden.

He looked for a solution for his problem of winning a ring, instead of transforming himself in the solution taking the challenge here.

If the Lakers didn't want him, why would they chase him so much? They could have just told him they are moving on in a different direction and that he is not in their plans.

no. I don't really think Lakers really wanted to resign him. D12 doesn't poss the spirit and drive of a winner. I don't think i'm alone here. Sign and trade didn't make a lot of sense either unless we can land a Harison Barns. No one on the rocket team with a healthy contract would be included in the deal either. So we are better off letting him walk and have 50 mil/ top pick to play with next summer. been on this forum for almost 8 years, first post! Official hello from a hardcore lakers fan. Good day. Don't worry guys, we are better off with out Howard. He is not a max player, not someone can carry this team into the future. Laker just saved themselves from a bad bad contract.

It is kind of exciting that we are hitting the reset button. We will have to be patient next year but, I think it will be worth it. We are not getting Lebron. Hopefully we can get a nice first rounder in 2014 and recruit a point guard like the one that was stolen from us.

Good first post.

Curiously I only post when the chips are down in Laker land.

I think this moments show how resilient the Lakers fans are, and this makes us stronger and I hope the FO gets better, maybe bring Phil in.

Repped High Quality Post

I was just having this conversation with my Laker buddies here. I think they wanted Howard gone. I have been a Laker fan since magic Johnson first put on #32 and counting Kobe's time with the Lakers that is 29-30 years of players who would flagrant foul their mothers to win a game. Then we have this Howard guy who does not seem to have that same attitude.

So I guess I am just another spoiled Laker fan who wants its leaders to leave it on the floor each night. Kobe can quit today and be proud he carried on the Laker tradition that he took from Magic who took it from kareem who took it from West....

Does anyone really think Howard was up to that challenge. It may hurt now only because LA has the potential to stink next season, but LA may be better off.

OH please, guys... don't delude yourselves. The Lakers wanted Dwight. It wouldn't make sense to let him leave with what they gave up for Dwight. Just look at the investment LAL lost in the period LAL got both Nash and Dwight: Andrew Bynum, 3 1st rd picks, and 1 2nd rd. That means that for at least 5 years, LAL will not have the ability to build through the draft, and will have to go through Free Agency for the next 4 to 5 yrs. The funny thing about that though is, there is no guarantee now that anyone will sign with an empty team the Lakers will look like within that period of time.

I think they wanted him but on their terms. they were not going to get rid of players, coaches or change their style of play for him.

nope they like him. It's just that dwight is here at the right place at the wrong time. We all know D'antoni didn't like post ups and still they didn't fire him and also the aging players plus injuries that happen plus the fans that always blame him(howard) for not playing the way he is in orlando because he just came in from back injury and the play is not suited for him that is why he left us i can't blame howard for that

I don't think they wanted Howard to return. With him getting the max and Kobe staying another 3 years, that kills their 2014 plan. If they really wanted him gone D'antoni would have been fired the first day of the off season just like the Clippers did to Del negro in hopes that CP3 would return.

They didn't even involve Magic in the talks. Like really?

i also think this too. lets not say we also like Dwight in here i can bet if we sign him we are stuck with a 118 mil contract for an undeserving guy. he wasn't worth the max contract i can bet on that. and fans will be mad again with Jim Buss. either Dwight resign or not some fans will be mad at him. lets just say the presence of Dantoni was a blessing next up is the firing of the coach. i dont want to be stuck another 5 years with overrated Howard.

Really respect Shaq more after his comments about Dwight going the 'easy route' to Houston and not being able to handle the pressures of LA. My favorite laker center of all time.

We'll never know for sure but I THINK Jim Buss didn't really know what he was doing at this point. It could be that confusion is setting in as all his bright ideas are turning to garbaaaage. Since he sees (even if he were blind he could see this) the Clippers gaining on him so he needs to prove that he was right at least on one major decision. Thus he stands by D'Antoni even at the cost of Dwight. That is why he brought D'Antoni to the meeting. It was a show of "strength," or so he thought.

This is the "super major leagues" and he knows he must have one decision to hang his hat on. Unfortunately, fans don't pay to see the coach. I think Abraham Lincoln said that.

The Lakers are in a bad place. I don't blame Dwight for leaving It is probably a good career choice with Kevin Mchale at the coaching position in Houston. D'Antoni is the reason he is gone. Plain and simple. I'm sure it has been brought up in this forum, but I'll just reiterate that fact. It is probably delusional to think that the Lakers did not want him back because he was going to be their selling point next free agency. Even as a bad as Buss is at running this franchise, we know he was thinking about this. They even drafted a shooting big man to help clear out the middle for Dwight. In retrospect, as gut wrenching as it is, PJ was our only hope for securing Howard and drawing players in next year. At this point, it is going to be a long journey for us to get back into contention. It will likely be a bumpy road.

I was watching one of the million talking head experts out there (sorry, I don't remember who or what network) and that person basically said the Lakers front office was split. Some wanted him but others definitely didn't. Makes sense. I kind of felt that way myself. Part of me was hopeful that Dwight would rise to the occasion. But the other half never really liked what I saw, even after he was healthy.

So, did the Lakers really want him? Probably half-heartedly. I think there are a lot of Lakers breathing a big sigh of relief right now.

Lakers will be fine. They are on track with their 2014 plan. One way or another they will turn out ok in a season or two.
