Should We Trade or Keep Pau Gasol if Dwight Howard Resigns?

I don't think Dwight Howard is going anywhere. I think he is pushing the Lakers much like Kobe did when he almost signed with the Clippers. I don't think Dwight is man enough to leave the Lakers and what we stand for, so the question comes, do we keep or trade Gasol when he re-signs? And what can we get for Gasol?

I believe that there's more than a handful of teams interested. Should be an interesting off season to say the least. A lot of decisions to be made.

My dream would be for

  • Dwight resigns

  • Trade Gasol and Blake to the Bulls for Deng and Hinrich

  • Amnesty Metta or move him to bench

Nash/ Hinrich

Kobe/ Nick Young/ Meeks

Deng/ Delfino

Mullens/ Clark (if we can't sign Clark move MWP to the backup 4)

Dwight/ Hill

Ultimately it depends on what we can get for him, but I would trade him for some youth, athleticism, etc. I have this sneaking suspicion that a Gasol trade is the big surprise that Mitch has.

I hope Mitch's surprise is something other than what TWC has planned, because that's not really a big surprise since Houston offered something similar.

I happen to think the surprise is that Phil will be coaching alongside Mike D'Antoni

Yea, i agree! But Phil doesn't really want to coach, at least it seems that way. So he can have a job upstairs and Rambis doing the dirty work on the bench and teaching Dwight the triangle

We have got to keep Gasol. When healthy he is a beast. We need to make Dwight A 3rd option on Offense because his offense is not nearly as good as Pau's.

Pau's trade value is high because he has an expiring contract of $19M. If LA wants to be a big player in 2014, they need to ride out the deal. If they trade him then LA is bringing back salary that may not be expiring in 2014. Thus, possibly messing up 2014 plans.

So do fans want youth and athletes now (better than some of the scrubs we have to sign now) or do we roll the dice for another potential "star" next offseason with some lesser pieces around them?

I will be Shocked if Dwight Howard re-signs short of my fave announcer Chick Hearn,no man is worth this much attention.Pau Gasol could possibly be moved if Dwight stays IMO.

I would say trade and get younger pieces to help compliment Kobe and Dwight.

I doubt Howard would stay. If he does they should move Pau if they can get a all star type player or another expiring contract that may be better suited for the team.

Here's my 2 cents:

If Dwight resigns, trade gasol for pieces NOT under contract in 2014 or for future picks.

If Dwight resigns and somehow Phil ends up coaching this team(unlikely), keep Pau because Phil can make it work between the 2.

If Dwight doesn't resign, trade Gasol because this team isn't in contention without Dwight so no point in reaching for something that's not in our grasp.

Gasol's contract is expiring after this upcoming season, no way the Lakers trade him.

If Dwight re-signs, I really think we should at least go till the allstar break with Pau on the team. If the team has a shot at the title and things are going well, you could either ride it out or go all-in and say: hey, this trade would make us good enough to give us a REAL shot at the title and either pull the trigger because of that or try to accomplish the same with Gasol since it might break the chemistry too much at that point.

All I know is that Mitch is going to have to do a lot of thinking in all of this. I would not want to be in his shoes right now or feel the pressure of going back and forth between winning now or utilizing their advantage of being able to sign a superstar that could get us back to elite level within a season or two. Aything could happen in my opinion.

Trade him for a pick next year or two, or a 3 way deal for lamarcus aldridge, rondo, or another top pt guard that's athletic and plays D.. howards inside pressence on D is 1000 times better if the opposing teams wing player aren't constantly blowing past our defenders

Or maybe by "suprise" they have a deal in the works to trade pau for a pick, get a 19 million tpe and flip that pick to atl or denver or milwaukie in a sign and trade for smith iggy or montae... or maybe a combo like monta and iggy or preferably iggy and smith...

Now I know we can't receive players via sign and trade, but can u if they are falling into the tpe? I think so, and if that's the case stern left a critical loop hole in the new cba and of all teams the lakers deserve to be the beneficieries =)

My thoughts exactly. If the trade makes sense, sure! Go ahead and ship him out. I still believe Pau can do some major damage if he went to a team who ran the offense through him. So many great things happen when he touches the ball. It's not just his scoring or dominance in the post. His passing keeps the ball moving which makes for some beautiful team basketball.

If we can trade him for josh smith...Better yet LAMARCUS ALDRIDGE then I would definitely trade him! Lamarcus aldridge game would be perfect to match up with Dwight Howard if Dwight stays!

And aldridge will only be 28 come July 19th, and if he doesnt work out his contract is up in 2015!

we should have traded Pau years ago. but at this time whether Dwight resigns or not i won't take anymore suitors because of his enormous expiring contract. and besides at a 33 yr old body i don't see anyone giving up a young and superb talent for Pau. one more problem is we still need Pau because there is no assurance when will Kobe be back and there is no other guy that is the 1st option when Kobe is still not there.as we learned when Kobe got injured Pau is the only capable guy or threat on our team. trading him have sailed already rather take his expiring contract than anybody.

If Lamarcus Aldridge really doesn't want to be in Portland anymore I could see them making a trade for Pau with his expiring contract so they can get ready for next year as well.. A combo of

Aldirdge and Dwight > Pau and Dwight..

Lamarcus shoots the outside shot OFTEN he doesn't play in the post much, he can face up and take other PF's off the dribble to the bucket, and he is just a better fit for us at this time of their careers he is quicker to play Defense on other PF's and it would be a good trade for both sides.

ill take that if it is possible but i think its a longshot. portland can get more than an older Gasol. especially if they are building around Lillard they want young talent.

I agree! Very slim chance to get Aldridge. Only on a 3 team trade.

Cavs offered Waiters, Thompson and number 1 and 19 and they turned that down.

Aldridge here isn't happening but man would that be nice. We would destroy the Heat inside.

Any idea where you think he is going?

Could Atlanta do a sign and trade w Josh Smith for Gasol and one of their bad contracts? Bucks w Ellis?

Could it be Chicago for Deng, Minny on a 3 team deal. Big surprise coming in the next 24 hours

Pau was the only guy that new how to feed D12 the ball. The big fellas played well together after D12 was closer to full strength. Hi-Low game was sick and the lobs are only going to increase since Howard's health is improving. I'm all in with both bigs for 2013-14!

Trade him to KU for Wiggins.

Or, keep him through next season...Championship bound, baby!

I can see the bucks for Ellis and a bad contract, or for Lamarcus, or josh smith, but I don't see it happening for deng..The bulls would try to send us boozer not deng..I can really see the hawks doing this actually 33 year old Pau still > Omer Asik overall..Asik just a better defender, but Pau has proven his play when he is the featured post presence..I think Pau will be on the move for one of the players mentioned above with them having hopes of resigning him cheaper at the end of the season..Stay tuned.

Lakers can not take on a player via Sign & Trade. That means we can't get Smith, Ellis, or Deng. All would require Sign & Trades.

The Trade i would prefer would be for Aldridge, although I think that it is VERY unlikely the Blazers would trade him to us. It would have to involve a 3 team trade.

I am not a big fan of waiting until summer of 2014 to go after big FA. If we can get talent now why wait? Even if it their salary (say ~15 mil) eats into the 2014 cap salary, you will still have plenty of cap space to go after some good players, even Paul George if he makes it to be a RFA.

Pau has to go. His lack of defense and his bad feet will kill us again this year. And he needs a change of scenery. But I will hang on to my idea of trading him for KLove. TO me that's the trade. If KL really wants out of Minny.

Besides that, if Mike is still the coach, he doesn't like Pau and doesn't know how to use him. So it's pointless. Waste of a year again. Sure Pau is expiring but that's what make him attractive additionally to other teams.

For $19mill we can nearly add a whole new roster. He's out

I just don't see minny trading Kevin love for him when they can get better for him elsewhere.
