Derrick Caracter and Devin Ebanks turning heads in Summer League Reporting from Las Vegas " They are the Lakers' second-round draft picks and they have no assurances of getting a guaranteed contract. They are second-round draft picks without any assurances of even being invited to the Lakers' training camp. But forwards Derrick Caracter and Devin Ebanks have impressed many, leading some to think the pair not only will attend L.A.'s training camp in late September but have improved their chances of making the opening-night roster. Caracter and Ebanks began to pave their path toward the NBA by playing sound basketball at the NBA's Summer....

Anyone think that Strawberry (Showed sparks), or Green (in light of his steady improvement in the VSL), will be invited to Camp???

B Shaw in his interview during the game seemed to dispel any notion of Strawberry having a future with the Lakers. He said something to the tune of "he's a great player, probably not with the Lakers but all teams are looking at players in the summer league"

I think green has a better shot at making the team just off raw athleticism, and the fact that they wanted him REALLY bad the year they took Bynum in the draft as they were surprised when he stated slipping. He also showed a pretty good array of offensive moves too. As i said in another post, I didn't thing he sucked through the first few games, he simply wasn't given minutes. Combine that with a crash course in the triange, it's bound to take time. He was given minutes in his final game and he found his groove in the second half. I think both will be invited to camp along with Sims, Critt, maybe Kruz, and the draft picks. Keep in mind that even if LA signs both picks, shannon b... and another big..... that only 13 players, and i think they prefer to have 14, so i trully believe someone is making the team. My preference would be Critt, and then Green. DJ had a ton of turnovers and poor decisions in the VSL.

Are any other teams even looking at Crittenton? I've been out of the loop a couple of days.

We need to shore up. I thought the Jazz were going way downhill, but they have rebounded in a huge way. They may have even made themselves better than last year.

Anybody know anything about the Lakers no longer having a D-League option. I heard something about it I think, but I can't remember. I think the D-Fenders, are defunct.

The Bakersfield Jam are our D-league affiliates for the coming season.

Strawberry didn't play within the system at all.. Many times he'd just try to drive to the hoop and dish... ignoring the triangle all together. It's probably why he doesn't have a future with the Lakers.

I had a gut feeling that Ebanks would make the team this year, and have a meaningful impact to our success. The way both are rookies are playing, has def exceeded any expectation i might have had. Hopefully they continue this trend during training camp. Both of these guys have the potential to become solid NBA players. I think we found not 1, but 2 diamonds in the 2nd round.

That's so true.. and it's nearly impossible to even find one. We'll see how it all plays out though. Ebanks may be the more highly rated player, but I like Caracter's chances of really helping out the Lakers with that solid body even more. Of course, as has been posted many times, don't expect Phil to play a rookie much at all no matter how good they are. He's weird like that.

Maybe I'm a "Lone Wolf" here, RR -- but I still say that it's NOT so much that Phil "Doesn't Like to play Rookies" -- I believe in that particular Regard, He's a victim of his own success. When you win -- you get "Rewarded" with "Lower-Round" picks. If they even Make the team, these Lower Picks are Not going to see that much Playing Time with Any Coach. It's also inherently a "Double-Whammy Effect", as well -- inasmuch as the fact that you have "Lower-Level Rookies" trying to Crack A "Playoff Caliber" Roster, or, as often as was/is the case with Phil -- trying to Crack A "Championship" Roster, "The Triangle" Notwithstanding.

Bottom Line: If Phil were coaching Denver a few years ago, I Severely Doubt that the Rookie, Carmelo Anthony, would be Riding the Cush for his first Couple of Years in The NBA. I really do. Same With Cleveland/LeBonehead, Miami/D-Wade, and Wizards/Wall, etc.

Phil Really hasn't had A Relatively High Draft pick in his Entire Coaching Career, so it's of No surprise to me that he makes the Choices that he does, Relative to Playing-Time and Rookies. However -- I will take to my grave that the perception of him in this Regard is Largely Erroneous -- Borne out of the Need for an "Easy Answer" to a Relatively Complex Issue.

Same as Politics. Same as Life in General, and "Human Nature" being what it is -- Perception is NOT Always Reality.

Agreed, young PG's are always a risk, they always want to prove something, they always want to handle the ball and go 1 on 5, they are reckless.

I like the direction we're going with our PG position, older veterans are much better in the triangle and more reliable. Young PG's are good on a crappy team, but not on our team and system.

Didn't the Nuggets express interest in Caracter? Maybe we can package him, Sasha, and Odom for Carmelo Anthony!

Interesting that someone posted that trade scenario. For the last several days I have been kicking around options on the Real GM "Trade Machine" and the scenario presented here does work. Truthfully, the trade is lopsided in favor of the Lakers (sorry but Lamar is not THAT valuable) but if Denver was wearing rose-colored glasses....I suppose they might do it....if we threw in a #1 pick, too. Denver would get the guy they really wanted in the draft (and I'm sure want even more since SL ended) in Derrick Caracter....and they would be getting Sasha's expiring contract.

Carmelo has been knocked in the past for jacking up shots and playing soft defense but his all-around game has really improved this past year and he is finally taking his training and conditioning much more seriously. Frankly, I would love to have this guy for what I project from him in the next 5-years or so.....not from what I saw up until this past year.

By the way - I love both our draft picks and they are locks to make the team. I watched both of them very closely in SL and they both have some great tools that are somewhat lacking on our roster.
