Guys,

Just saw the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes for 'Let Me In', which opens October 1st. The American remake of the GREAT Swedish vampire film, 'Let The Right One In'.

It got an amazing 96 percent!! Yikes! I have never seen a movie garner that kind of critics reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

BRING THAT B*TCH ON!! I CAN'T WAIT!!!

Randy,

I've seen the previews for this movie and it looks excellent. I'm really looking forward to seeing that one. It has the young girl actress Chloe Moretz from the movie [email protected], and she basically stole the show in that movie. She's a very talented young actress and I'd wager that she's got a bright future in the business. She has a lot of presence for one so young and based on the previews I've seen, her performance in this new movie looks to be another great one.

Steve,

She must be really good to have impressed you that much. She will also have to use all her acting chops to match or surpass the performance the young girl did in that original. Did you see the original? If not, I would say rent it before you catch this one if you can. It really was just that great. I gaurantee you will love it. If you do, don't watch it dubbed, but use the American theatrical subtitles setup.

I will be very interested to make a comparison between the two after I see this remake. I have seen that movie four times now, and the more I watch it, the more I catch. Many would view the ending as kind of 'happy', but in fact it gets progessively darker and more ominous the more you watch it and you begin to realize the implications of what is really going on there.

Randy, Yeah, she kicked a lot of @ss in the movie [email protected] (no pun intended). Honestly, she pulled off that role in such a way that she was like an 11-year-old Dirty Hairy. Definitely one of the most [email protected] little kid characters I've ever seen in a movie. As for Let the Right One In, I will watch it tonight! I just subscribed to Netflix for the first time in years and apparently they now have a large collection of movies that you can stream off the web and watch on your computer. I checked just now and Netflix has the movie available to watch online. Even luckier, it's the original Swedish dialogue version with English subtitles! I can't wait to get home and check it out. Thanks for the recommendation, buddy. I'm sure I'll have more thoughts on the movie tomorrow. Also, for any of you Star Wars fans out there, I'd recommend the movie Fan Boys. Last weekend I saw it for the first time and it definitely had some "laugh out loud" moments. Star Wars guru that I am, I thought the movie was hilarious and it definitely brings back a lot of good memories from my younger days as a nerdy, Star Wars loving geek. Lastly, for those fans of Hong Kong cinema, I would HIGHLY recommend the movie Ip Man, starring Hong Kong Kung Fu sensation Donnie Yen. Ip Man is a semi-biographical account of the legendary Wing Chun grandmaster Yip Man. Yip is officially the first Kung Fu master to teach Wing Chun openly and had several students who became Kung Fu masters in their own regard, including martial arts icon Bruce Lee. The film takes place in the early WWII era during the Japanese invasion of China. Ip Man (also spelled Yip Man), once a member of a....

Steve,

I am a HUGE Star Wars fan. I will make a point of checking out Fan boys. I am probably one of the heretics who actually liked the last three Star War movies than the first three, lol. What can I say? I am a fan of intrigue and I loved the dark rise of the Sith. Not sure what that says about me, lol. Just fell in love with the special effects in the last three too. I wish the first three could have shot that way.

I will be very interested in what you though of Let The Right One In. I really want to know your thoughts on the ending of that movie. I found it one of best endings of any movie I have seen, because of all it implies right from the beginning of the film. Hopefully we can exchange ideas about it tomorrow.

**SPOILER ALERT** The Book of Eli **SPOILER ALERT** I saw The Book of Eli on Blue Ray last night and as someone who's not particularly religious, there were certain themes that I found slightly offputting, while other aspects of the movie were surprisingly moving. The film follows the exploits of a post apocalyptic paladin of sorts named Eli (Denzel Washington), who's on a mission to deliver one of the last remaining copies of the Holy Bible to the promised land, or some such nonsense. Still, one particularly profound theme came from the film's primary antagonist named Carnegie, played by brilliant character actor Gary Oldman. Carnegie is the ambitious and ruthless old mayor of a dirty little town, and he desperately seeks a copy of a rare book, which is later revealed to be the Holy Bible. Apparently in this story nearly all known copies of the bible were destroyed after the cataclysmic war, and Carnegie seeks the bible as a means of manipulating and controlling the weak, scared masses. Carnegie even uses the word "weapon" to describe the bible, which makes his intentions abundantly clear. Honestly, Oldman's character in The Book of Eli could have been any number of current and former politicians, aspiring politicians, religious leaders, evangelists, terrorists, or government dictators who exist in the world today. He was just like any man who would use God and the bible to spread fear amongst the masses in order to control and more easily manipulate them. Once enthralled with visions of "God's plan", the afterlife, and mixed in with some flat out lies and untruths, the idea is that the people will support agendas that result in heinous and destructive acts, including war (Iraq, Afghanistan), torture (Iraq and Afghan Wars), government sanctioned m*rd*r (Health Insurance Companies), excessive greed (Wall street, Banks, Corporations), exploitation....

Shmeeze,

Is that one with Tim Roth as the piano player who never left that ship? If so, I saw many years ago.

Steve, I like your review of The Book Of Eli. I concur.

Finally saw Let Me In last night. The remake of the great Swedish vampire film Let The Right One In.

It was very well done and a terrific movie that warrants the great reviews it is getting. They emphasized some things in that movie and demphasized others. But they stayed true to the ideas and tone of the original.

Did I like the original better? Perhaps a bit. To me the original was even more intimate, the characters better fleshed out. The side stories examined in a some more detail. It is also possible I like the original better because it was the first one I saw. Had I seen this one first, maybe I would like it better.

Don't want to reveal anything for those who may wish to watch it. But I can tell you you will like it if you go. It is a very good film. It is very layered and textured with that kind of dark, thought provoking ending that goes against the grain of so many 'happy ending' movies you see today.

I had occasion to see Ondine by Neil Jordan, for the second time, and I was reminded of just what a little gem this film is.

So, for the finer palates of the cinephiles, perhaps Randy, you should give it a try.

Finally got around to seeing Fritz Lang's 'Metropolis'. Wow, I really liked that movie. The movie was made in 1927 and still works today. Definately would reccomend it to anyone who wants to see one of the great early films of cinema.

Need opinions on Spartacus!

They are now showing it in Italy. I presume they have already finished showing it in the States.

I saw the first installment. Not impressed. The only thing that I was impressed with was Erin Cummings!

Does the series get any better, or will it be just more of the same? I am thinking about putting my time to better use if this is all there is.

Well, it's been a while since I've been here, I wish the Lakers were still playing, but alas, all good things come to an end. So I watched the remake Let Me In, and.....I was sorely dissapointed. After the masterpiece that was Let the right One In, it was always going to be difficult to follow up on a near perfect movie. A friend of mine had borrowed my copy of Let the Right One In and had it for the best part of a year and I was suffering some major withdrawal symptoms. I finally got it back and in it went into the Blu Ray Player and I was so relieved to watch it in all it's glory once again. One part of the movie, that caught my attention, is throughout the movie, the landscape is covered in snow, except the sequence where Virgina is attacked by Eli. For some reason, there is not a spec of snow to be found throughout that sequence, which I thought was a little odd. With the amount of times I have watched this movie, I'm kind of surprised I didn't spot this earlier. Anyhow, just a small detail which really doesn't take away from what is a beautiful movie.

So, has anyboby seen Thor, Green Lantern and the new X Men movies yet?

^^ I don't think GL and X-Men are out yet, but I've heard great reviews on Thor, with critics even going as far as to say that it's the best superhero flick since The Dark Knight. So I'm really excited to see it.

I'm really not that excited to see Green Lantern and X-Men though, they look terrible and the X-Men plot just rubs me the wrong way seeing as it's noncanonical with the comics. I would also prefer it if Ryan Reynolds stuck to doing lame romantic comedies and stayed away from my superhero movies.

My brother and dad love it but I wasn't too wild about it. It might as well be Roman softcore porn. I've heard that the series gets much better but I was also turned off from it after episode 1.

I am however DVRing Game of Thrones, it looks very promising.

I just saw Hangover Part II. IMO, it wasn't as good as the first -- actually somewhat disappointing -- but that could be because I watched it with my girlfriend instead of the dudes. Still worth a few laughs.

^^ I'm going to see it tonight. I'm not going into it with high hopes though. Usually when they make another movie, it's just not as good as the first. The originality of the first is gone, that's a big part of it I think.

Has anybody watched the new pirates movie? I liked it. Obviously not as good as the first. But way better than the second one, which sucked.

You're absolutely right. But I won't say too much more about Hangover 2 in case I slip up with a spoiler or something.

Dude, I always fall asleep during the Pirates movies. Not sure why I even went to go see the sequels. I don't know why but I'm just not a big fan of pirates in general (these people were criminals!), and for some reason the movies would lose me about an hour in and I'd fall asleep. No offense to anyone who likes these movies. I just fall asleep during movies that I'm not that interested in.

Mm, every woman wants a gay best friend.

EDIT:

My current girl (we're doing a mutual break up in a couple months) told me about this dude that she hung out with for months before she realized he wasn't gay and was trying to hit her up. He took her to the opera! Lulz.

Game of Thrones? What's that about?

And nah I don't mind you asking. We've been doing the long distance thing for like 9 out of the 12 months we've been together, and we both agreed that the situation's just unfavorable for our relationship. But we still have two months free together before she moves to Boston (gross), so we're just going to hang out and enjoy each other's company until she has to leave. It's like practicing being friends before we have to just be friends, but we're still gonna do some couple-ish stuff. And it's cool because I'll just be able to hang out with my friends in LA while she hangs out with hers before she has to leave for 2 years. It all kinda makes the inevitable seem less traumatic when it finally comes, I guess. Still sucks though. Would've been good.

Guess I'll be getting back in the saddle again. cool3 Back in the game.

Oh okay gotcha! That's a really mature choice that you guys are making, over having the possibility of it crashing and burning with you guys trying to keep a cross country thing going. Plus, who knows where you guys will be in 2 years when she gets back too. I'll probably have to deal with my gf taking her talents to Berkley in Spring 2012 for grad school. It's only a 6 hour drive and it's something that's workable.

Game of Thrones:

I was kindy iffy on it when I DVRed the first episode, but then it just reeled me in.

You're 24! Should have figured it out by now. Good girls like bad boys. It is in their genes I think. They dream of sexually taming them like some sort of wild horse, and they dream of redeeming them (most women have some odd missionary tendancy completely unexplainable to normal men). You, on the other hand, are a given, already the slave, no mystery, and you are probably too nice to her. It is all part of the mysterious formula. We have all seen it I am sure. It goes like this: you like a girl, you try and get close to her, you spend time on it, trying to "be friends" (usually a total failure as a strategy, if you want a friend, then get a dog), and you figure that sooner or later she will capitulate and have some sort of religious epiphany discovering just how much in love she is with you, but, one day, after all of this wasted time (and believe me, it is wasted time) a new planet moves into your little orbit, a bad boy, apparently doesn't give a damn about her, but snaps his fingers and she is already in his bed drawn like a moth to a flame. Go figure.

Here's the scientific formula: You are Hamburger Helper. __________(insert any unreachable bad boy in films) is Filet Mignon, unreachable, but object of dreamy-eyed fantasy life. They can't get it on with the bad boy hottie, but they can go to a flick and get a fix, and then make love to you while fantasizing about him. You're just the tool. Seem like a crappy situation, well, you're right, but just remember, you can do the same thing, but just remember what the real life girl's name is while you do so!

I must be completely blind because I was not aware that Depp is a bad boy nowadays! He's so little and frail, middled aged, wears eyeliner, and has a wife and kids. There's no bad boy there. I've asked women what they see and it's a different answer every time, "talent", "romantic", "passionate". They've said things like that. I think they picture themselves getting swept off their feet or something while he reads them poetry. I dunno. Maybe they want that sensitive guy.

It is true though, I never got more tail in my life until I started speaking bluntly, acted cold and calculated, was in unbelievable shape and was referred to by many as a...well it's a certain male body part that is a nickname for Richard. That was when women were attracted to me the most.

I enjoyed the hamburger helper analogy. I've done it hundreds of times and I know that my partners have done it, it's human nature to do so. Sometimes I've absolutely had no choice but to do it lol

Well, bad boy, or acceptable variations. I still remember when women got all stupid over him after he did Chocolat, you know, romantic, free-spirited gypsy type, therefore untameable [big moth to flame factor here (aka the panty-elastic dissolving factor)!] In any case, you missed the first six lessons of this Remedial Sexual Politics 101 course. Get the notes. Mini-Quiz next week.

The first six lessons:

  1. The scientific proof for the extraterrestrial origin of the female sex.

  2. Structural anatomy of the female brain. Are we different species?

  3. Why only paranoid schizophrenics understand what women really want.

  4. Putting a square peg into a round hole. Imposing monogamy through marriage in a genetically polygamous species.

  5. Men and societal enslavement. The benefits of marriage for the female sex.

  6. Castrating feminism and the struggle to redefine heterosexual maleness as an incurable disease.

Quote:
There’s never been a shortage of speculation surrounding recent Christopher Nolan films such as Inception and The Dark Knight. The director is notoriously tight-lipped about his movies " both in terms of story beats and character information.

However, thanks to the very public Dark Knight Rises filming currently going on in India, we now have a clearer look at the potential Lazarus Pit as well as potential details regarding the origin of super villain Bane (though file the latter part under “rumor” for now).

It goes without saying that if you’re attempting to avoid all Dark Knight Rises-related spoilers and speculation, be warned " the following post will contain more-detailed pictures from the India shoot as well as a potential (albeit thin) origin story for Tom Hardy’s Bane. Read on at your own risk!

On Friday we reported on the possibility that the oval-shaped pit, with a green screen background, being prepared by the Dark Knight Rises crew would be the Nolan-world version of Ra’s al Ghul’s notorious Lazarus Pits " featured heavily in the comics. On the printed page, the pits had a more fantastical explanation; however, spectators at the India shoot may have secured one unexpected detail " one that would ground the pits in a more real-world utility as well as tie the League of Shadows storyline to the film’s other chief antagonist " Bane.

Here’s the eyewitness report, courtesy of The Dark Knight Rises Community on Facebook:

“Eyewitnesses and crew members told us of a particular scene being filmed,” the site reports, “where a bald-headed child wearing ragged clothes emerges from the well and pulls his hood over his head. From the conversations, we reckon this is a young Bane, emerging from a vat of Venom, trained by Pence’s Ra’s al Ghul. The years of addiction to Venom builds him to be a massive monster with amped up senses, intelligence and physical prowess.”

Granted, the “report” is entirely hearsay but it would offer a compelling explanation for Nolan’s inclusion of the Lazarus Pits as well as how Bane will fit into the real-world setting " not to mention the reason for the Ra’s al Ghul flashbacks (as portrayed by Josh Pence). That said, there’s no actual evidence that points to the assertion that the pool is actually a Venom vat " so it’s fair to say that the eyewitnesses here are making a lot of assumptions. So take this particular set of details with a grain of salt.

Regardless, check out the improved “Lazarus Pit” images below, followed by Pence in India, as well as a purported training ground (courtesy of Mehul Gohil at The Dark Knight Rises Community).

http://screenrant.com/dark-knight-rises ... nk-114528/

There are also photos of the set if you click the link.

Well Bane is now assumed to be in the next Batman movie! I really can't wait, next to Joker, he's probably one of my favorite Batman villains. Really excited to see what they do with him in this film.

Ok so I actually watched the Hangover for the first time last night. Everytime I was supposed to go we ended up not going for some reason lol. I actually really really liked it. It was kind of a dumb humor and it definitely wasn't as good as the first, just be because it wasn't as original obviously. But there were some pretty hilarious parts.

The thailand strippers....LOL! Nastiest movie I have seen.

My favorite quote...

"I have a demon in me...yes he has semen in him"!

LOL yeah absolutely loved it.. but dang, it was pretty freakin disgusting. I liked when they open up the ice chest and chow comes leaping out of it. "you gon kill on me!" lol. and he tells alan "if you wanted chows sunglasses you just had to ask. you didnt have to kill me." ..lmao. chow is my fav character in those movies lol

^^ lol yeah that scene was hilarious. Alan said that his uncle once saw an albino polar bear haha I think both Alan and Chow are the funniest in the movie.

Just finished watching the whole first season of Lights Out.

Great show, and enjoyed the twist at the end.

Also watched the new South Park episode "You're Getting Old". Man what a downer. Even though I know that SP is continuing the 15th season in October, I couldn't help but get the feeling that the show is almost over and this is it's last season after that last episode.

The Collector - D

BIG wtf on this movie. It just seemed to fall into the "gore porn" genre of horror films that died out not too long ago.

^^ I'm living on re-runs of The Office, Malcom In The Middle and It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia right now. Looks like I'm gonna have to be switching over to the movie channels pretty soon.

I'm rewatching the show Las Vegas. It's too bad the series ended, but it was fun while it lasted.

I'm kind of in a wait and see mode. They're really going to miss him, I feel that he's the main character. He's the most entertaining character on the show for me.

I feel the same, I especially liked how the season ended. I'm wondering who is going to be the knew boss. Who do you think it's going to be????
